Both Parties Love Big Government

According this article on Yahoo, both Democrats and Republicans love big government, just in different places:

Yahoo Article said:
"The basic difference between Democrats and Republicans in recent decades is which aspect of government spending they prefer," said Steven Schier , a political scientist at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. "With the Republicans, it's defense. With the Democrats, it's education, environment, health care etc. That's been the major difference between the two parties going back to Reagan."

Both parties love big government _ just different programs

Thoughts?

Couldn't agree more. I've been whining about that all along (found a post where I did back in 2006 just after I joined :D). The GOP loves to talk about smaller government, but they presided over the largest expansion of federal government in the history of the Republic - and NOT just on war spending. Bush's last budget alone was larger than the budgets of the federal, every state, and every local government combined just ten years earlier. Obama's reliance on government solutions will continue the trend.

Clearly, though, it's what the electorate wants, because we have continued to vote for these two parties. The only party I know of that's serious about scaling back the size of government is consistently and massively trounced election after election.

That is why I do not support either major party... though I do prefer that our military continue being advanced...

I agree. Both parties love big government. But what can you expect of professional politicians? Asking them to reduce the size of government is asking them to reduce their own importance and power.

Yeah, that's why I can't rally behind a specific party. They're both composed of people that want to control and screw me...and not give me any benefits for my troubles either :biglaugh:

Both parties are the same. They both take our money and spend it very unwisely (just in different areas). They both care nothing for our personal liberties (they both have their pet liberties which are more important than the others), they are both corrupt, and they both pander to plank issues that get their bases to do what they want (like how gay marriage is only a threat during election years?).

But who's fault is this? The voters. As long as we the voters continue to be lead by the noses year after year into voting for the same two parties we have no one but ourselves to blame.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

I disagree that both parties are the same.

The Democratic party has always (historically speaking) espoused using the government to address problems that are too large for the private sector (defense, highways, NASA, etc.) - and they have always been willing to raise the money to pay for it through taxation.

The Republicans USED TO BE the party that eschewed large government, and wanted to limit the monies raised in concert.

For the last 30 years, the Republican party has been pro-big government, but they didn't have the courage to raise the funds through taxation - choosing instead to pass along an ungodly debt to future generations.

There is a distinct difference in the two parties in areas of social issues as well.

What strikes me is the Republican belief in Big Business. It seems that the lines become thin between a big business and big government after a time.

If you love big business, you love big government.
