Do you think that the new Pope is a good thing, with his conservatism and bigotry towards other beliefs?

From an atheist who live in america viewpoint it is neither good or bad until he tries to influence politics in the United States and than it is a bad thing no matter who is in charge or what the intent or issue is. Catholics would do well to keep their religion in their homes churches and their political powerplay out of north american politics. I don't care what he does as long as he doesn't campaign for it over here in our goverment. He may be the "king" of the church but his opinion (irrgardless who the pope is) and theories are most unwelcomed and unappreciated in our secular state. At least by me.

I don't see the new pope changing much from what the old pope did.

There are a number of issues on which the Catholic Church seems to me to be behind the curve. Contraception and homosexuality, to name two. I don't think the new pope will change tradition on those issues.

I like his promise to reach out to other faiths.

One woman I saw on the news put it nicely.

"He's basically John Paul II without the charisma."

But...he picked Benedict XVI as his pope name...and XV was a moderate, so we'll have to see if he changes a little.

I do not feel it appropriate for us to discuss what is "good" or "bad" for our Catholic Brethren. He is not OUR pope, but THEIR pope.

But don't you think netDoc, that we have a right to say whether he will improve/make reparations to the tensions between Catholics and the rest of the world?:)

Unless you feel that the effects/influence of the Pope is (or should be) limited to "our Catholic Brethen", your protest seems without merit.

If I could find the speech in California in which he said that "All non Chrisitians are deficient." I would post a link.

Shouldn't the head of the Catholic church be one who strictly maintains official doctrine?

Reform is, well, Protestantism.

All non-Catholic faiths ARE deficient....... if we didn't believe so, we would not be Catholic.

Just because we believe that the Catholic Church alone has the fullness of God's truth, does not mean that we view others as scum..... to believe that you can teach another about love, when done in a caring, compassionate manner, does not constitute bigotry. We view EVERY human being as a child of God, born in the image of the Father, worthy of respect and love from conception to natural death.

This might have been asked already, but if I am a son of God, why is he sending me to hell if indeed Christianity is true?

If this is getting too far off-topic I can PM you.

Here is some of Benedict's "bigotry":

From his homily today:
"With this awareness, I address myself to everyone, even to those who follow other religions or who are simply seeking an answer to the fundamental questions of life and have not yet found it. I address everyone with simplicity and affection, to assure them that the Church wants to continue to build an open and sincere dialogue with them, in a search for the true good of mankind and of society."

Reform is, well, Protestantism.
I would have to say not truly, reform is what Luther wanted. Protestantism just kinda took it out of his hands, beat it with a stick, trampled it under a few horse-drawn carriages, and then beat it with the stick some more.

On the news clip I saw, Bush seemed to approve of the new Pope, which scares me because Bush supported Indiana's New governor, Mich Daniels, who has to be the biggest F-up ever.
Hes only been in for four months, and already hes frozen funds to the education part of the budget, froze funds to jails and prisons, got the day light savings time bill approved, (Which Indiana does not need to go by Day Light Savings time for economical purposes since it is a agricultural state, which means the economical growth occurs when the farmers are farming, during the time when Day Light Savings time isn't in effect.) He doesn't want state ownership of the new Colt's stadium, and several other bad things. So if they new pope just happens to be republican, bad things might happen.
