Gamers questions..

Just two small questions none of wich deserved their own thread. Their power combined however.....:D

1. What game(s) made such an impact in your life that no matter what the review would say, you are going to buy the next sequel anyway..

Age of Empires, Shogun: Total War, Street Fighter II (I've even ponied up for a tourney stick that I haven't received yet), Mortal Kombat II (I've only missed Armageddon), Zelda (NES), Metroid II (almost; I cannot bring myself to buy a Wii), Wolfenstein 3D, Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect

I used to have Final Fantasy, but sadly VIII and X were bad enough that I stopped following the series.

2. What do you think is the biggest game/name so far? And with "biggest" I mean whatever you think is big, so I expect to get a lot of different answers.
Big does not mean most sold, neither does it mean best known, so....

"Big" for the market would probably be World of Warcraft or the Sims.

You must have had this one on the SNES. I know nobody who would put MK3 and even number one of the megadrive on top of MK2..

Yep. I had an SNES, but never a Genesis. MK2 on Genesis really did suck, suck, suck. The stupidest platform I ever bought an MK for was the PC (I got MK4 for it), but I got to play as Goro :). That does remind me, though, I need to go Ebay surfing for MK: Gold for the Dreamcast.

I was one of those Megadrive players. One of those:"Há, I am better, I got blood" kinda player :D
I did play MK4 on the N64 though.. But after they went 3D, MK was never the same
I still bought he rest but no longer bothered with DC..

Ah, on MK1 I would have killed to get the Genesis version for the blood specifically. Fortunately, we did have it on MKII. I thought the SNES version was as good as it got, but then I saw the 32x version, and I wished I had that instead.

No, it's not been the same, and it's not been as good (I really do think MK2 was the best of the series), but it's had some good moments. In the recent MKvDC, we got the old drop an arcade on their head fatality back. That brought back a lot of memories :p.

They've spent a lot of time working on the next MK. I wonder if it'll be good.

Really? That's interesting. Most people I've ever talked to were crazy about VIII, it's been almost a universal favorite out of the FF players I've asked. Why don't you like it?

I noticed that half of the game was CGI. FFVII was good enough that I didn't notice that problem, but VIII just didn't have its charms. I like to play my games, not watch them. I've not enjoyed a new Final Fantasy since.

Another reason is that the characters were all very stale to me. There wasn't a single one that seemed alive. Even the SNES characters had that.

I hated the junction system. If I'm going to grind, then I want to at least not have to stand there so as to draw magic out for excruciatingly long periods of time. What's more, most of the game wasn't difficult until Ultimecia made herself difficult solely by blowing away all my key junctions. I like my enemies difficult, but I don't like them to be difficult by crippling my character.

The story didn't call to me either, and without good characters, I more pushed myself than the game pushed me. The story seemed stale, and so did the world (IX & X at least didn't seem stale).

In general, it was an average game with a lot of time put into CGI scenes, with a gameplay engine I did not like at all, and with no qualities that simply made it stand out. It wasn't a terrible game; it was just mediocre, and I expected something on the level of VII (or V, which I had played through a translated ROM). Combine all of that with the near constant praise the game elicited, and that was enough for me to be thoroughly disgusted. I felt that if you put "Final Fantasy" on a product, people would automatically praise it, and Square's product would go steadily downhill. I thought I might be wrong after IX (but that was mainly fanservice), but X confirmed my suspicions, and I've not bought a FF since.

Hmm...I gotcha. That makes a lot of sense. I hadn't thought about it before, but there WERE a lot of vid sections and such in VIII.

What about X? I didn't get very far into it before I moved and haven't picked it up since (got too involved in Oblivion :p ), so I didn't really have a chance to decide if I liked it or not.

X has a decent story (but not great). It's world, though, feels alive, not stale. The biggest problems with X are the videos and that they straightjacket you. You can't do anything but what they declare. There's a preset path, and it's like you're walking down a hallway. When there's a turn, you turn. You can't wander the world very much to do your own thing, you just do what they tell you.

Now Oblivion is a dang good game, and I'll keep buying the Elder Scrolls ;).

Hmm...Yeah. I always enjoyed being able to wander around and do my own thing.

So far, Oblivion is the only one I've played, and I'm pretty much in love with it. Although a friend has a copy of Morrowind and has promised to let me borrow it :D

I would like to announce that I couldn't disagree with you more.

Anyway. Carry on. :D

Not being able to skip cutscenes in X (or being able to skip them and being punished for doing so in X-2) is rubbish.
