Are We Any More Civilized?

Wouldn't the increase in democratic governments around the world signal that we are more civilized since these people are choosing to settle their political differences in a rather peaceful fashion instead of resorting to violence?

Perhaps. Does civilized action include our relationship with non-humans as well?

Hi Guitar's Cry,

This is another question, but we have become more civilized. That we all are not vegetarians may trouble you but it doesn't discount how far we have come.

Actually, I'm not a vegetarian either. ;)

Shouldn't our relationship with everything else also influence whether we are civilized or not?

No we are not more civilized, perhaps more technologically advanced.

There are still those that hunt, or there are still those that let others kill for them.

We can learn a lot from animals. For example, Dale Carnegie said that we can learn unconditional love from a dog. When I see the cruel things that humans inflict on each other and on other animal species, I know that there is no way that animals would ever do these things to each other.

For example, in the fashion industry, animals are skinned ALIVE for their fur. Some are also electrocuted from the inside so as not to damage their pelts. A metal rod is inserted into their vagina or their anus and they are electrocuted. :( Most times fur cannot be traced and lots of fur on the market right now comes from dogs, cats or rabbits.

A lot of dog and cat fur comes from China and as I said, the origins of fur cannot really be traced. In China, the animals are skinned alive and are conscious for a few minutes after. They are dumped on a pile of other bodies and later on cooked.

It could, but as to the orginal question; yes, we have become a lot more civilized.

Hi Hema,

No we are not more civilized, perhaps more technologically advanced.

So the advance of democratic ideals around the world doesn't constitute evidence that we are more civilized that we used to be?

Much respect your love for animals. Humans could learn so much from them. At one time humans lived in harmony with the animal kingdom, then as our "minds" grew, we became uncivilized. Humans became barbarians.

Is the advance of democratic ideals any more widespread than any other time? And more importantly, are they adhered to? More interestingly, how is the advance of democratic ideals more civilized, especially if the advance solves none of the age-old problems of cruelty, torture, and disregard for compassion that we want "civilization" to solve?

Hi GC,

Yes.

Yes.

There is a reason why the standard of living is much higher in Democratic countries than non-democratic ones. I would say that is an advance in compassion and puts a big dent in cruelty and torture.
