Homosexuals Banned from Giving Blood

I tried to give blood at uni the other day because i have rare blood apparently and the Red Cross here are in dangerously short supply. I found out why. We have to make an appointment to give blood, and fill out a survey. No wonder people don't want to give blood because its too damn complicated. Why do i have to answer questions about whether i lived in the UK in the 80's when im 18 years old????
They are always campaigning that they need blood but they make it so hard to give blood.

To be honest, i don't think homosexuals are targeted here. If anything, British people are. There was a whole page of questions on that, and 3 or 4 on male-male sexual contact.

People shouldn't take it as exclusion, only trying to protect the health of the rest of the community. Although people want to do the right thing and donate, sometimes not donating is in the best interests of the community.

The FDA is very picky though. Once when I was donating plasma, my blood clotted in the machine, and according to the FDA, I was ineligible to donate for two weeks. The FDA also wont let people donate blood and plasma regularly. If you donate blood, you can't donate blood for six weeks, or plasma for six weeks. Plasma can be donated twice a week, but for some reason, if blood is donated, not for six weeks. I've always donated both though and haven't had any problems.

Actually it's heterosexual black women who have the highest HIV/AIDs rates.

But I'm a liberal, what do I know? :p
Is this because of sex, or drug use (which already disqualifies you)? Also, is this worldwide or just in America? I've already posted the CDC's stats in this thread. Is there any major flaws you see in them?

Is it easy to donate blood where you live? As in can you just walk in off the street answer a fewq questions and away you go?

I used to donate often, and all you had to do was fill out a short questionnaire and then have the needle stuck in you and that's it.

You go on, give them your name and ID, answer a questionnaire about 20 questions long, have your pulse and blood pressure taken, get pricked in the finger so they can test the iron in your blood, and then hook you up. It has never taken me longer than 20 minutes, and that has been when the blood center was busy.
Plasma on the other hand, takes about 90 minutes total, but where I go to donate, you are payed to compensate for your time.

It's pretty much the same here. With plasma, the first time it takes longer because they have to do something with some computers, but after the first appointment it usually takes about an hour each time. That little compensation (along with my job) is really helping me get through college. :D

Maybe that's been my problem. I have been donating twice a week, every week for a couple months, and in the month period I haven't been able to donate, I have had much more energy. I started to feel better about the fourth week, but I also had a five day break from work....

DAMN!

Ya'll get paid!
It use to be 20 dollars the first visit, and 30 the second. Then it was 20/40 for the longest time, 30/30 for a couple weeks, back to 20/40, and now 20/30 with a 10 dollar, 20 dollar, and 30 dollar bonus on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th donation of the month.
It's very easy money, and has kept me afloat in some hard times.

You can NOT donate blood twice a week sweetheart...You will DIE///

Your body can NOT replenish the volume that quick...

Do you understand me..???In the mean time eat beets...and everything vitamin a,and c...and IRON>>>eat liver...and drink lots of water..

You can NOT donate twice a week...ONCE every 3 months is safe..NOT twice a week..You will die,...

I couldn't give blood for a few years because I had lived in Germany. I believe they were worried about mad cow disease in my case.

How often can I give?
Whole blood donors may give once every 56 days (eight weeks) in order to allow plenty of time to replenish their red blood cells. Apheresis (platelet) donors can donate more frequently, as much as twice in one week up to 24 times per year, because the platelet and plasma components are replaced in the body quicker than red blood cells. Platelets and Plasma will return to normal levels within a few hours of donating. The red blood cells, the oxygen carrying cells, can take two weeks or longer to fully return to normal.

But apparrently they know how to steal your (plasma) ...that can be extracted from yr blood (your blood is returned to your body) as may as 2X times a week..

That must be what you have been doing..
