They didn't reject gay marriage. They passed a law trying to take the right away and invalidate people's families. The fact that you're proud of that is nothing less than vile.

No, they rejected gay marriage. You can frame it however you want, but that doesn't change the truth.

No, but they are attacking my friends, family, and church, which is what ended my support for their cause.

I'll never end my support for LDS members to worship and marry and believe and speak whatever they want provided they don't hurt other people. No matter how revolting some of the things some of them say are to me. That's just how I roll.

No. The Constitution protected gays' and lesbians' rights to marry. The voters are trying to take it away with Proposition 8. Seriously dude, did you even follow this issue?

Yeah. The proposition amended the constitution, so the protection is no longer there. I was against it, but came around in the last 24 hours (in large part thanks to the video in this thread).

:clap:clap:clap There you go. That wasn't so hard.

Now, let's start working on your insistence on dictating to others what their values should be and forcing them to agree with you through the state . . .

Thank you both for your rational responses.
The intent of the ad is to taint supporters of Proposition 8 with a pathetic caricature of LDS-as-cult/stormtrooper: "Yea," smirks one of the super-white cult members, "What should we ban next?"

Shall we infer the same crude and ugly cynicism on the part of all who would support the Proposition? What if we were to replace these caricatures with some other pair ...
Bush - Chaney?
McCain - Palin?
Obama - Biden?
Or are the Mormons somehow worthy of special denigration - and why? To pretend that this is not a bigoted add is pathetic deceit.

That anyone would be so unprincipled as to defend this garbage is more than a little disturbing.

Isn't that what politics are all about? We got this constitution thing in the 1700s and people have been changing it and creating laws based on it ever since to force people to conform to their view of how the world should be. This isn't anything new. I honestly don't care if gay people can get married, but I'm not going to support their cause if this is the type of ad their supporters praise. Like I said yesterday, they're on their own.

Is there any post at RF prior to this ad where you stated you supported the rights of gays to marry?

if there is, I apologize and stand corrected but until I see it, I think you are being disingenuous

I participate in another forum more than here and I've supported it extensively. Anyone here who participates there can vouch for that.

Then send me a link privately otherwise I still think you're being disingenuous.

That add is sick and disgusting. I just lost a lot of respect for several members here who thought it was "fair play".

Because that's a legitimate concern. If rights can be taken away to appease a religiously motivated kulturkampf, then that's the question to ask, Jay.

The facts: the LDS church (and yes, others as well), officially supported pushing the law into the private space of legally married people with the deliberate purpose of shredding their marriages. That's not because they're a "cult" though it is rather stormtrooperish.

There's nothing "Mormon" about what you're calling out. So please spare me the lame ad hominems. You're better than that.

Not even close. Please show me where there is any sarcasm in this add? Its serious, which makes it disgusting.

Its simple, yes, I disagree with my Church's stance on Prop 8. But this add steps way beyond the line! Its bigoted, hate filled, and disingenuous, plain and simple. And I question whether others who support it are bigoted as well.

Is there some significant way in which your behavior here differs from the White person who, after being mugged by a single Black person, responds by refusing to support racial equality for any Black person? I'm not wanting to argue the point with you, Jonny. I know damn well what I think of you for what you've done. I'm just curious how you think of yourself.

Sarcasm? Satire. And Jonathan Swift was quite serious.

Explain why. You might convince me. I've asked Jay to explain and he has nothing.
