What's the purpose of prison?

Charity

Let's go racing boys !
Congratulations by the way on your new position.......The purpose of prison is to take away your freedom and supposedly punish you for your crime against society.....

In my book the purpose of prison should simply be to keep DANGEROUS people off the streets.

Also people who refuse to respect the basic rights of others in a free society,
should be forced to live in a "sub-society" of their own.

I personally am not into "punishing" people.

Helping them yes. Restricting their activity in/from free society yes...
when absolutely necessary.

It is rather shocking and sad that we as a free society do more for the criminal than the victim.

I don't care enough about criminals to even punish them. It's not so much punishing that's the purpose of prison, but locking them up, forgetting about them, and throwing away the key.

I'd like to see at least half of our prison money going towards helping victims and their families... (eg., take away cable TV, weight rooms, and perhaps indoor plumbing). Forcing prisoners to do hard labor would be a good replacement for all recreation.

That's bound to rehabilitate them? I don't know...I just know that putting away the key and using the money to help the victim didn't really do it either.

I don't care about rehab, Victor.

Perhaps they can learn something in hard labor.

If we stopped imprisoning people for stupidities
(like posession of a god given plant)
there would be less prisoners/prisons
and more resources to help ALL the people who need the help.

Victims first... offenders second.
(and I'm not talking about cable tv.
when did that ever help ANYONE)

The main point of my post was to say that we imprison
WAY to many people for WAY to many stupid things.
(and often in the name of "punishment")

Keep the world safe and trust karma/god/(natural)magic to take care of the rest.

The purpose of prison is to provide a university for criminals to gain new skills and become stronger, more callous, and gain street cred and new connections. An amateur criminal who goes through a few years of prison should be a professional by the time he/she gets out.

Reasons to incarcerate, In order of priority...

1. Protect the innocent.
2. Rehabilitation.
3. Deter the criminal from doing it again.
4. Deter others from committing the same crime.
5. Punish the criminal in the name of justice.

The reason, and the realty of prisons are two different things. The reason is not followed, the reality is that there is way way to many people in prison who do not belong there, and there is way way to many people free who belong in prison.

I agree, our system is broken on numerous levels.
