Celebrating Obama's Candidacy

The Devil's Advocate
Two? You put Afghanistan in that category?
I'm not sure that it's not in that category. I agree that the Afghanistan war had justification (tho I'm ambivalent about war in general), unlike the Iraq war, but we seem bogged down there too. I have heard bitter complaints more than once from service members or their family about how we spend all our time talking about the Iraq war and forget that people are still fighting and dying in Afghanistan. And we did not even get bin Laden. So I would say that while the Afghanistan war may have been justified, the way the administration went about it has been severely wanting.

I have to agree with Lilithu. The Afghani war started out with a far better premise than Haliburton's War, but Washington has put their fingers in it and mucked it all up. Sad that this causes a lot of pain, suffering and deaths to be in vain. We need to get out of there as well as Iraq.

It's interesting, too, that the world was supportive of us in Afghanistan, but we haven't really cooperated with anyone but the UK when it comes to strategy. We screwed things up with Pakistan (we shouldn't gained access to their western borders immediately) getting too clever on that Pakistan/India tightrope. I mean, we can't sign weapons deals with India while we try to get Pakistan to let our military on its soil. Stupid. But the damage is done. I think we should be able to get out of Afghanistan over the next few months. We need to operate as many attacks on Taliban rebels as we can, write the Afghan government a check, drop some napalm on the poppy fields, and just head on out of there.

Wow, common ground.
I really TRY to see the good and bad on both sides. I'm Republican, but not blind.:)

I do see some positive things in Obama; however, his record (as brief as it is) is too liberal for me. And I see plenty of negative things in McCain as well, but national security is paramount IMO, and I trust McCain more in this.

Could you expound a little on what you mean by "national security?"

The obvious. Strong military and keeping this country secure. This also involves the Iraq war, which you and I disagree on, so I don't want to get into it here.

McCain knows the military, no question. Obama has little experience in it. IMO the national government's job is to keep us safe from other countries and it's our job to feed and shelter ourselves, and find our own health care.

I again, appreciate Obama's view of the importance of fathers and families.

Excellent points. Well stated.
Actually, I would say that they're ridiculously over-simplified and immature. The 'every man for himself' theory of government is just silly and selfish and creates a society where a few people control almost all the wealth, while millions of people suffer needlessly.

Often times, when I dig deep into the what people mean by the term "selfishness" I find that there is nothing more beautiful and moral than "selfishness".
