I believe he or she needs to be able to listen. My husband says that s/he should be able to apologize if he is wrong or makes a mistake. Most of what the others have said also apply.

I'm not sure that's a good one - seems to me that it could confuse people about the strength of the leadership - and who actually is the leader.

The key to leadership is to understand that it is essentially an act of service. No leader has any power that is not given to him/her by agreement of the people being led. A real leader is essentially acting on their behalf, not his own. This is why G. Bush has been an absolutely terrible leader. He is a fool who thinks leadership is all about himself, and about enacting his own ideas, desires, and opinions.
A true leader carries out the will of the people he is being asked to lead. And within that context he can then encourage the people toward their better inclinations. A true leader offers the people he leads, options, not mandates. And he asks them to choose the higher ground if possible. But he carries out their will in the end, because he is ultimately their servant, and he knows it.
Intelligence, humility, honesty, dignity, these are the traits of a leader.

A good leader would have to be accepting of other people's feelings and beliefs, and would also have to be willing to take on a lot of resposiblity, which is why I would never want to be a leader... like the president of a country or whatever.

I think that most people like to see someone as a leader that wouldn't ask anyone to do a job that they themselves wouldn't do. I think that someone who has worked their way into a position no matter what it is whether it is political, religious or job related shows great strength and determination. Unlike someone who steps into a leadership position who did so because their dad or some one they know owns a company or buys the position for them.
People who actually work their way into any position usually know and understand every aspect of a business, unlike someone who has no experience and knows very little about the position they are taking.
Experience, knowledge, understanding and courtesy for others makes a great leader.
