If you are referring to my post about the young woman, (maybe you aren't), but she was practically covered in tattoos. That's a lot different than a few.

It is an interesting thought. The rule as far as I have always seen it is that you shouldn't have any new tattoos once activated into the church.
I think the social taboo against tattoos extends beyond mormonism. There is a lot of negative stereotype about people who get tattoos, particularly extensive ones, in the culture from which mormonism eminates (western and conservative). The church doesn't really want to be assosciated with the culture that tattoos represent in the western world.
In the cultures that use tattoos as a social norm, this sterotype does not exist, and so there is no negativity associated with such tattoos. That makes them a lot better in my opinion, because they are not a product of rebellion (a big stereotype, I know, but one that is widely held) but of normality and conformity.
Of course, social normality is not the only issue, tattoos are permanent images that are considered by the church as damaging to the body, and a defilement of the temple that is the body. As such, if a person wishes to obtain cultural tattoos in knowledge of the gospel, it would still be wrong.
To simplify, I put the following in order of acceptability
No tattoos with or without gospel knowledge
Cultural tattoos without knowledge of gospel
artistic tattoos without knowlege of the gospel
Cultural tattoos with knowledge of gospel
artistic tattoos with knowledge of gospel
As far as carrying things into the afterlife, our social attitudes remain the same, so I find it hard to believe that there will be no diversity of culture, but along with it will be a better understanding of it and therefore a lack of bigotry (which I would consider the divisive thing more than diversity itself.

i dont think tattoos are something to have a tiff about really.i dont think it matters God will accept you, i belive, wether you have them or not.

a type of tattoo that is traditional to get in a culture, usually it deals with family traditions or local religious things.
A good example would be maori tatoos which cover a lot of the body and are very intricate and detailed pattern designs.
