Offending the Religious

From the AP today:

Does anyone have the right not to have their religious beliefs offended?

If my opinion offends someone am I supposed to keep quiet ?
Does this mean I'm not allowed to voice my opinion on subjects I am opposed to ?
I get plenty of Joes Witnesses calling at my door voicing there opinion on things that offend my common sense.Do I have lesser rights of free speech than they do ?
If people of a religious persuasion think they have a right to voice their beliefs,so do I to counter them when I think they are talking nonsense.

If people come around to have discussions, they presumably want discussion, so fair enough, though I've always found that saying I have quite other beliefs, wishing them well and closing the door firmly, though it's a nuisance, takes only a minute or so.

Rhys,
These people don't come around for a discussion, they come around to convert you to their belief and to abandon your beliefs.
They think its their god given right to disturb you to inform you of their "joyus message"
Thats both the JW's and the LDS.

No, you don't have any right not to be offended. I am offended by idiocy all the time. I am going to leave in a minute to drive home in the rain. I will likely be confronted by idiocy, but provided none of them actually comes into contact with me, I will have to go along with the flow, if I intend to make it to my destination.

Perhaps folks who are constantly getting offended because someone thinks differently than they do, should take a look and decide if their ideas are defensible? If so, then who cares what the opposition thinks, or says? If not, then perhaps you should take a more critical view of your thoughts/beliefs.

I am a firm believer in the idea that your rights extend right up to, but not beyond my nose, and I, in turn will expect my rights to extend up to, but not beyond your nose as well. This goes for speech as well. And if none of that works for you, then you may want to go with what "The Family Guy" suggested, and just develop a sense of humor.

Boy,are you layed back or what ? I'd love to be able to adopt your attitude. However I find it hard to believe you are that layed back.I wonder what your reaction would be if someone attacked your beliefs. You say "No, you don't have any right not to be offended",a double negative ? am I reading you wrong here ?

Some nations probably do extend a right of protecting people from being offended. Are they actually protected...no. Nor am I sure how many of those laws specify religion or just include some broad definition of speech discrimination.

Should people hold the right not to have their religious beliefs offended? Absolutely not. I adhere to the the notion that we have the right to be offended. We are better off for it as well.

Should I temper my speech because someone's religious beliefs my lead them to take offense at what I might say? Absolutely not. I might...but that will be my decision and no one else's to make.

Your truth is not my truth, and when your truth comes start out and says I'm evil and going to hell yes it can be hateful. I believe Booko answered the rest in away I would agree with.

sir, don't be mislead the truth i am saying is not something i created in my imagination. it is written in the bible. it is not my truth, it is a biblical truth.

again, it is nothing that i jsut chose to invent or imagine as true.

But what should that mean to people who don't believe in the bible?

You can be upset that some moron that doesn't know anything about your religion is making stupid statements about it, but other than being upset...you really don't have anything else to do. You can be offended if someone is telling outright lies. No one can stop someone from being offended. However, do not expect the world to change because your wee little feelings are hurt.

People attack my beliefs frequently enough. The reactions I have to these vary. Sometimes I find the attack statements pathetic, some humorous, some annoying, some hateful. It just depends on the intent behind the attack. Making jokes or satire about certain religions is not something to get all worked up about. Now...inciting hate by breeding lies about believers in certain religions is quite different.

Saying that someone's beliefs are something out of a Cracker Jack box is a far cry from saying that everyone that follows X religion are violent pedophiles that need to be drawn and quartered.

don't mislead the other people who will read this thread.

The truth i read is NOT MY OWN SIR... not my own

It is the "truth" you choose to believe in, not necessarily the "truth" that others find. So it is your truth that you follow. You can claim that it is the absolute "truth" in the world, but since you have absolutely no proof to back that up, you cannot expect everyone else in the world to just believe what you say.

I would rather have you not all up in my face enough to be smelling my breath in the first place. How's that? Whether my breath smells like Colgate or the PowerAde I just drank is none of your concern. It's kind of this thing called "minding your own business". Works extra special great when dealing with people's beliefs too. ;)

i am not forcing you to believe that is a CHOICE that is yours to make....

just acknowledge the fact that whatever i beleive in is not a product of my imagination or bitternes becasue there are religous groups who suck the life out of you. or a product of your longing to do what you want wothout any rules.

what i beleive in is written, and i know for a fact and with sufficient logical thinking everything that is written in the bible is true.

again, i am not forcing anyone to beleive. all i am saying i am not inventing what i beleive.

that works if you dont care about your neihbor, guess what, alot of people are killing their neihbors now adays, exctly because of your kind of thinking.

its like oh the neihbor is killing his wife, " oh let us mind our own business" its their belief to beat up their wives...geez that kind of a world is scary...

is that the kind of neihbor that you would want to have?

Why should I acknowledge that your religion is not a product of your imagination just because you base it on some book?

Are you insinuating that I follow my religion out of a "longing to do what (I) want"? Or that my religion has no rules? Or that I am "inventing what I believe"? :sarcastic See, this is exactly what I mean by uninformed people making blanket statements about which they know absolutely nothing about. Ah well...just makes them look the idiot in the long run.

What in the world does a man abusing or beating his wife have to do with what religion someone else is? Hey buddy...Christian men beat and murder their wives too...so should I be scared to live next to a Christian man or try to convert him before he murders his wife? Your point fails. Poof.

You have concern for your fellow man when it comes to basic human rights. No one should be abused, or controlled, or whatnot...BUT...whether someone is Hindu, Buddhist, Wiccan, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Shamanistic or so on is not an issue of infringing on anyone else's human rights. It is not a crime to be anyone of those. And they are all as valid a belief as the other. Just because you may favor one over the other does not change this fact.
