Westboro Baptist Church...

I am not going to say I hate the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) as that would forfill their prophecy of hatred.

Post evidence for/against their claims here and post your opinions on the WBC!

I'll start...

I see them as immoral, biblical fanatics, who preach hatred and confuse God (the creator) with Nature (the balancing force of the universe e.g. life-death). There hatred of homosexuals, AIDS sufferers, AIDS sympathisers (Princess Diana) is disgusting.

Iv'e heard of this group. It's the Phelps family isn't it?

There the one's who believe that homosexuals eat poo. (That's not a joke. They actually believe this to be a fact. Watch the Louis Theroux show)

I don't hate them. They interest me because I always wonder when I hear them abuse people and say we are all going to hell etc, if they are actually aware that they are talking.

After all, according to thier beliefs (correct me if i'm wrong) didn't the God they believe in create everything? Which would include homosexuals. So if there God hates homosexuals, why did he/she/it make them?

That's like burning ants with a magnifying glass.

Apologies if I sound dense on the subject but I find them hard to take seriously.

Not defending the belief, but they probably believe that homosexuality is a choice, that God didn't make them that way, they choose to be that way. I think this interpretation is even more ridiculous, myself.

Either way the assumuntion that all homosexuals eat poo is just too daft. That's when I started looking at them as if I was watching a cartoon.

I don't think they do this because of a religious stand, they do it because they hate certain issues and hide behind their church to spread that word.
Fred Phelps has effectivley brainwashed his family to believe everything he does and some of his family members who have left are never spoken of and there are rumours that Fred had something to do with his daughter in laws death. She was a catholic.

Heres a good documentary on them by Keith Allan.
YouTube - Keith Allen Vs Westboro Baptist Church(part 1of 5)

WARNING. This documentary contains swearing and a certain scene where nakedness from the waist down is involved. Watch at your own risk.

I don't hate this group, but I feel for their smaller children who are being brainwashed by their parents just as they were by their father.

Take heart. They are not Baptists. Look at their websites. They are unabashed, TULIP believing Calvinists.
I don't know why they call themselves Baptists.
The two aren't mutually exclusive. You wouldn't know it by looking at the Southern Baptist Convention, but Baptists have historically been very diverse, and many of them have accepted Calvinist doctrines to varying extents. Some of my ancestors were Primitive Baptists, and while they wouldn't have called themselves Calvinists, the Calvinist influence is pretty clear. Reformed Baptists are flat-out Calvinists.

Please don't insult pond scum by comparing it to them ;)
Speaking of pond scum, is there really any substantive difference between what the Phelps family and the leaders of the Christian right? Compare their remarks to the remarks made by Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson after 9/11.

If different at all, it is only in degree, certainly not in kind.

I can agree with all that. I'm sure God must have some use for them, but I can't imagine what it would be, except to serve as a bad example.
