is sharia law in britain inevitable, is this a gradual taking over of our inner cities or is it harmless , why do second and third generation muslims feel the need for sharia in britain . any body got any answers or comments.

Most brits do not like muslims, simply because about 10 of them blew up some trains. It was an utterly disgusting thing, but dont judge the whole group on some evil sick twisted people.

The recommendation is to admit sharia law in Great Britain for the sake of the high Muslim population. My question is: why do we make exceptions for Islam? We don't have CHRISTIAN courts or PAGAN courts! What is with this?

It's a stupid idea. Muslims need to follow the law of the land with no exceptions.

It's a tricky situation, and I'm in two minds about it.

Whilst I appreciate minority communities "don't relate to the British legal system", if I went to the States, I wouldn't expect to cart Scots law with me; no, I would live under Federal and state law.

The same applies here; we already have three legal systems (English, Scottish, and Northern Irish). However, I acknowledge the English legal system allows the use of alternative systems of arbitration, opening up the possibility of Islamic sharia courts, and Jewish Beth Din.

There is a potential solution, then: let it should stay within those communities, exclusively, e.g. let Muslims deal with internal contracts under sharia law, provided it does not cause acts illegal under UK law. No hand-cutting, because the prosecution of Shoplifting would still be reserved to UK courts.

But, this is a very tricky area indeed -- one for politicians and law-makers, and certainly not one for clerics. It ends up like religio-cultural devolution for the justice system...

I don't think its inevitable. Many of the Muslim immigrants left Shari'a law in other countries for Britain. I imagine their voice deserves to be heard as well?

Rowan Williams certainly gives an interesting side to the debate, we do already have a Jewish Court, which admittedly i was not aware of, but i don't like this notion at all. i am more interested in what Muslims of England think.

i am worried that Sharia law is going to be harsher than UK law, more socially conservative, i would want to know exactly what rights, powers and means of punishments such a court would have before i personally approve of them.

Is Britain doing a good job assimilating immigrants? Or is it making even second and third generation folk feel like they have no stake in British society?

we have made no attempt to assimilate immigrants, our government adopted the multicultural approach and its back firing big time

Secularism is clashing with Old Tradition Theocracy. If Secularism is not careful, Theocracy will win the war.

Whether Sharia is good or bad, i have followed the law of the land, so should they, they must be bonkers to want sharia law.

I can't speak for Britain, but I do know that it appears to be the second or third generation folk we have some problems with here.

If this goes through, maybe I should move to England and take my laws with me. As I understand it, guns are extremely restricted there? Not anymore!

Adopting Sharia in Britain, even as an option, would be completely insane. The comment by Patricia from London is spot on:

Also for all you non-muslims in Britain worried about whether muslims want shariah or not, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. I think it's all talk. Most muslims around the different countries of the world don't even want the laws of Islam to personally dicatate anything in their lives, hence why they don't follow it. Muslims as a whole know we need shariah, but the fact that we have not established it for hundreds of years properly speaks for itself. Even in places where the muslims are the majority and the leaders and would have the most right to install a shariah-based governemnt have wilfully failed to implement it in its entirety, which consequently makes it fail dismally. In truth shariah law is much harder on a muslim than it could be on anyone else. The capital punishments pretty much apply only to muslims unless it is something that upsets the overall public good, such as murder and whatnot. So many muslims would have to actually live out the injunctions contained within Islam, and they really don't want that. It's all talk.

You think adding another law for people is not a fairly big deal?
Equality under the law is an essential part of democracy. Having a separate system is insane. Its all or nothing.
