How did Saul die?

How did Saul die? Suicide or fallen in battle?

1 Samuel 31:4-6 says "...Saul took a sword and fell upon it. And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead and...died with him. So Saul died..."

2 Samuel 21:12 says "...the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa."

The Bible being the inerrant Word of God, we can only conclude that Saul was a Philistine, and by extension the tribe of Benjamin (and therefore the Children of Israel) were Philistines. :D

I find that when I'm reading the Bible it helps to read more than just 15 words. If you look at the verses right before the ones you listed you can see that Saul was shot with many arrows from the Philistine archers and was badly wounded. He asked his armor bearer to kill him so that the Philistines would not have a chance to mock him, but the armor bearer refused and so Saul committed suicide. Saul was already as good as dead at the hands of the Philistines, he just killed himself to get it over with and avoid the mocking.

Did the Philistines kill him or not?

If you strangle someone who is dying of congestive heart disease, is it correct to say that they died of heart disease?

Yet it looks like the author of 2 Samuel is the one doing the mocking, when he says Saul was slain by the Philistines. If Osama bin Laden were surrounded by Marines, and he blew himself up with a grenade, would we say the USMC took out Osama?

At the battle of Midway the USS Yorktown was so severely damaged by Japanese aircraft she had to be abandoned. The fire burned out and a salvage crew went on board. Hours later a Japanese submarine came across the Yorktown barely underweigh. The sub put two torpedoes into her and she rolled over and sank.

Who gets credit for the kill?

There is also discrepancy in the Gospels about how Judas died.

The Death Of Judas

Steven Elliott

This page attempts to illustrate various problems concerning the bible's account of Judas' death. Almost all of what is on this page appears elsewhere (see links), but the author thought it worth while to have a single page dedicated to all of the problems concerning Judas' death.
The relevant verses in Matthew are:
3 When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4 saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." They said, "What is that to us? See to it yourself." 5 And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself. 6 But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are blood money." 7 So they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." RSV Matt 27:3-10
The relevant verses in Acts are:
15 In those days Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 "Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their language Akel'dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, `Let his habitation become desolate, and let there be no one to live in it'; and `His office let another take.' RSV Acts 1:15-20

Saul's armor bearer only killed Saul because Saul told him to. He more than likely would not have done it if Saul had not asked him to. In fact, if I remember correctly, the armor bearer did not want to do it. I suppose in that way, it would be considered suicide.
I just found the verse-- The armor bearer would not do it, so Saul did it himself and the armor bearer killed himself, too.

1Sa 31:4 Then said Saul unto his armorbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armorbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
1Sa 31:5 And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
