We'll need Mars to be a stepping stone to the asteroid belt. The belt is a heck of a lot farther away than Mars, and much more spread out.

Mars has an atmosphere. Not too good as a launch system. Besides, I never mentioned the asteroid belt. More like one near the Earth.

For anyone really interested in space habitation there is a project occuring on the Big Island of Hawaii called the PISCES project (
Pacific International Space Center for
Exploration Systems (PISCES)

PISCES - Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems

Vision statement for those who would like a little info:

The vision of PISCES is a comprehensive, international research and education center devoted to research and education that will develop technologies needed to sustain human life on the Moon and beyond.

Astronomy is my major and I live near this, however I'm an undergrad and not exactly useful (yet) but it is pretty interesting imo.

In space, actual distance is less important than the velocity change required to go there. If we use Mars as a "stepping stone" to the asteroids we need to throw in the circularization velocity change (delta-v) to stay at Mars (some of which can be negated by aerobraking), plus the delta-v of getting back into space and on an ascent ellipse to the asteroids. It is much more efficient to just bypass the planet altogether.

I was just browsing the Net earlier and stumbled across a website that works on refuting the claims that the Moon landings were hoaxes. Clavius Moon Base - debunking the moon hoax

I was just curious what people around here think about the landings.

Probably the best proof available is that there is a reflector for a laser there, so we can measure the precise distance between the earth and the moon. How would the laser be there, if there was no moon landing?

Perhaps we should go to Mars.

First, human explorers are best situated to dig for evidence that life may have once existed on Mars.

Second, we should go there as a spiritual quest. Much as the Moon was a meaningful and symbolic milestone in human achievement, so too would Mars be the next milestone. Man does not live by bread (or space ore) alone. We have a spiritual need to experience such grand achievements.

We can't afford to go to Mars. We're trying to get the Iraqi army to stand up so we can stand down. Maybe in 2070 or so we can think about going to Barsoom.

Of course, the moon landings were a hoax! When a group of blockheads and crackpots tell you something is a hoax, then you'd better listen -- and listen well. Blockheads and crackpots always tell the truth. Everyone knows that.

What about the crackpots that say that the conspiracies sprouted are the true conspiracy, designed to distract us from immoral shenanigans by corrupt, national politicians?

2070 is fine with me. And I'm not saying it shouldn't be a private venture, or that Americans have to fund the effort all by themselves.

Of course they were. We landed on Callisto instead. Couldn't you tell that the "Earth" was made of paper and intended to hide Jupiter?
