Is God male?

This arose, in a time when a woman only valid as a thing. God is the Father, as if God is a human being like us. Also the complete trinity upon which the Christianity builds itself is male. Father, son and holy spirit. Somewere there is the alibi femininity, too: Maria In many Christian groupings Maria may not be adored at all. This Maria doesn't have any own power but only functions as a petitioner between man and "male-God". If the trinity of father, son and holy spirit would be understood as an allegory, (similarly like in the Islam "this loving, the lover and the love") it could be understood as "the giving, the receiving and the gift". And the faith would come loose of the childlike faith scheme of a "male-God" and a sun to his right. Then every man ready to receive could be the "son".

I believe he would be considered "male".
I understand that God is an impossible thing to envision, or rationalise, but I think that there's enough evidence in the Bible to justifiable believe Him to be "male". (note quoatations...)

In the ancient Israel of about 1200 to 1000 b.C., there where predominantly two cults:
The masculine Jahwe cult and the female Astarte cult

Jahwe is the Hebrew name of the God

In Astarte (goddess of the Canaanites, also of Salomon) unites aspects of a goddess as mother, of vegetation, of fertility, of love and war.
Finally the that the Jahwe cult dispelled the Astarte cult. This is the cause of masculinity of God in the Judaism as well as the Christianity.

AT LAST!!!!
I must have seen this thread some 30 mins ago, remembered a thread in which Scott very clearly explained why God was a man, and why women could not be priests; I have been searching everywhere (Under my bed, wardrobes etc, but only came up with a few coins, abit of string...)
Please correct me Scott, if I get this wrong, but I seem to remember that the reason you gave was that Woman was chosen by God as the Vessel to bring Children into the world , and that Men were chosen to bring spirituality in the world?, and that neither could be exchanged?
You see, I do pay attention - even If I'm a little fuzzy around the edges>:tsk:

Why would a unique, divine Creator need genitalia? If He's omnipresent wouldn't He need to be kind of homogenous? How could he have seperate, discrete, ahem...parts? --(and what would He do with them?)

Thank you Seyorni for this question : “Why would a unique, divine Creator need genitalia?” That is the point. God is the creator of the universe. Also if we know nowadays that there was the big bang. We know now that every 10th sun has planets. We know that there are about 100 000 000 suns in our galaxy and that there are billions of billions more galaxies. There must be other intelligent life in the universe. And our God is also their God. But who says all of them have also two sex? Once the ancient Greeks said: “And if we would be cows, we would imagine our Gods as cows.” It’s because we cannot imagine something formless we put on the formless a form. But the formless can take any form. So we limit God in our minds. God may have send a millions of messengers on extraterrestrial planets. It couldn’t have been just one. How do we feel if we call God our holy Mother? It’s o.k. if we limit the unlimited, because we have a limited mind. But at least we should be aware that we made this limit. The limit in this example is to put only male aspects on the divinity.

Why ask questions like that? We have what we know about God from our Bible. Our Bible has strong evidence supporting that God is male. If we believe the Bible (this is the Christian forum so I guess most people here do), then there is no reason to believe He isn't male.

Questions are good!

The only evidence the Bible has that God is male is the use of the male pronoun.

And of COURSE they would use the male pronoun - at that time, females were inferior. If they had said God was female, that would be the same as implying that God was weak - and that isn't very good for promoting your religion :)

It's rather silly to sort of anthromorphatize God to our likeness in an exhaustive manner. I think that the male description of God is entirely plausible; not in the sense that He is muscular and has a penis, rather that He is by essence a Leader, or Mighty, or the Head...as in the Hebrew word "Rosh" i.e. the Source....think about it!

Just the fact that this question is always being asked in one form or another, to me, shows that we care too much about the male/female split and that there is no equality among the sexes.

Definately. This shows we have a long way to go. But by such questions can the truth be revealed and Unity ushered in.

Hello Natural Submission!

With your appendix: "Don't make your stomachs a graveyard for animals." I do agree fully! I am vegetarian now for 27 years.

I would asy you, instead of just giving links, to copy the texts you find important out of that side and put it here inside. I don't follow links and I suppose others to neither.
So there would be nothing to talk about.

Please may I ask a question ?
(after that onre I mean). Why is there this never-ending need for God to be catagorised ?
God is so totally beyond our comprehension, and yet we seem to be forever trying to descibe him, allocate a sex to him - God is so 'extra'ordinary that we simply have not got the words, the intellect the ability to describe him. He is God.:)

Could you please instead of just giving links copy the things you find important of that side and put it here inside, so there is something to talk about. I don’t follow links and many others neither.

By the way… your appendix: “Don't make your stomachs a graveyard for animals” is very good, I’m vegetarian now since 37 years.
