What Is Religion

Friends,
Here at RF we all are here to know/discuss/etc about Religion.
But am sorry to find that We are not clear about our Concept of Religion itself.

Religion to me is simply a WAY or a PATH which is used by any individual for self realisation.

Kindly view your opinions on this.

Except for those religions that are concerned with God realization, or the non-self.

I associate this with spirituality, religion involves dogmatic teachings and scriptures. Though by dictionary definition religion could be that, I find it confusing that it encompasses both because they are exclusive.

I don't think it's creator was being particularly serious when they started it. I suspect it was a moral code and nothing to get too hot and bothered about with people generating all of these offshoots and trying to ram them down each others throats.

Although, one could reasonably argue that self is most fully realized in God. (Isn't that why we repent, or "die to self" and turn toward God?) I believe the whole thrust of Xy is to enable us to claim the reality that we are heirs, with Christ, of God's kingdom -- to help us realize that we are more part of God than we are led to believe.

That's what I meant by God-realization.

If religion was backed up with proof it probably would no longer be called religion.

It's all a load of blind faith and human beings just take advantage of it. In the main they have no interest in leading others to be closer to God and all of that stuff. Just so one set of people can covet your ox and you living in constant fear of something or other.

The entire "Religion is the opiate of the masses" quote, usually taken out of context.

"Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions.
Karl Marx, Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right"

The OP could be true. Not all religions have a god, but I think that any one who has a faith is trying to be the best that s/he can be whether they do it without a god or with God's help.

Then my love of science, reason and skepticism is now a religion. But I don't believe in God. Maybe I am love. Weird.

I AM THE END ALL AND BE ALL!

Friend Lunamoth,
When there is no god how can one have any *God-realisation* realisation has to of the self.

Aasimar- kindly note those scriptures etc you refer to are written by people to make others understand about THAT PATH. The PATH is imporatnt not the scriptures as even without reading them one can start with an understanding and travel the path and reach the goal. Same goes with teachings they are for more understanding of that Path.
Rogue _believer, Religion being a belief well one is fre to believe in any thing and can be religious about it but that is not a religion.
