    confession is when you confess aloud to God your sins in order to be absolved from them. while you can talk to God at any time through prayer without the need of anyone mediating, a priest acting with the authority of god is the only one who can actually free you of those sins.

    i also agree with dan. the bible should never be taken fundamentally. like any other text written by men, it is influenced by the context in which it was written.. :) this is important to keep in mind- that, although it DOES contain the word of God, it is not direct from Him!
