I grew up as a Southern Baptist and spent 30 years in that denomination. I entered seminary as a SB, but came out the other side as a deist. The more I learned about theology, history and astronomy, the more I realized that organized religion is a human invention. Those three subjects have become a lifelong passion.

I believe in God the Creator; of that I have no doubt. But my belief does not stem from holy books, divine revelation, or prophets. I believe because when I look out into nature, I see design and purpose, not randomness. I have the same feelings when peering out into the cosmos with awe and wonder.

I consider myself a Christian Deist, which is a self applied label. Deism is the belief in God based on personal observations. Christianity is the belief in Jesus' teachings, especially on morality and compassion. Very simple.

I am an ordained minister, but I do not serve a church at this time. My ministry is as a police chaplain, where I am also a CSI officer. My ordination was done so that I could legally marry couples in my state.

Upon completion of seminary, I received a Doctor of Theology degree (ThD - identical to a PhD), as well as a Doctor of Divinity honoris causa. Although I could go by the title of Dr., I chose not to. There are detailed posts in the Deism DIR about my experience in seminary, and why I continued as I morphed into a deist.

I never claimed to be a Saint, so don't expect me to act like one!
