    Do rights come from God?

Yes, I noted this earlier, that I'm talking about the construct of what a human right is versus the practical reality of whether that thing exists or not. Because that is such a change in definition as to rob the concept of all meaningfulness. The concept of human rights exists to stand in...

Iowa governor signs 'religious freedom restoration act' into law at Christian conservative event

Because there are truly evil and vile acts, acts that infringe on others' rights, and areas of life that are not governed by rights and can be improved with proper regulation. Weak does not mean impotent, nor strong invulnerable. I wouldn't consider it much of a law if it doesn't protect...

Iowa governor signs 'religious freedom restoration act' into law at Christian conservative event

I don't see how these questions follow. The goal of the law is to protect everyone in society. If it is the weak harming the strong, the strong are just as protected.

Iowa governor signs 'religious freedom restoration act' into law at Christian conservative event

I'm certainly not free to commit homicide. Yes. The consequences would be pretty awful, but I can't get past forcing someone to work for/allow into their property (potentially into their home depending on how they run their business) people they don't want to. It's also not a high priority...

    Do rights come from God?

What it is that makes us human. Human Nature (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) If you want to read one write up about discourse on human nature. Maybe that is the case, civilization still cannot be the source of human rights; this stance is that human rights do not exist.

Iowa governor signs 'religious freedom restoration act' into law at Christian conservative event

It's always interesting when people act surprised that others are reacting to the things that are happening right now and not other things that aren't happening. Maybe no one is trying to outlaw turning the other cheek, maybe we don't talk about the freedom to do things that culture at large...

    Do rights come from God?

Could you elaborate on what you mean by what it is? Because what you've described is the opposite of the concept of human rights. Which, again, exists solely to argue that societal entities don't have the authority to grant or rescind certain privileges that humans retain inherently, arising...

    Do rights come from God?

This isn't either/or. It wasn't a statement about reality, but about the construct. If you say that human rights are granted by society/human actors, then you are defining the thing by its negation.

    Do rights come from God?

By rights, I mean human/natural rights. Rights do come from God, they are an outreach of the philosophical/spiritual Christian and Jewish tradition. And, rights discourse devolves into nonsense without some higher metaphysical sourcing. Those cannot be the source of rights. The whole point of...

Convince me that the world IS overpopulated

Scientific, technological progress would be severely hampered by a loss of population growth for one. It requires ever increasing specialization, that only a percentage of the population is fit for, to make progress and specialized workers to maintain the systems that are developed. You didn't...

Convince me that the world IS overpopulated

The byproducts of our consumption are based on what we consume, how we consume it, and how we handle the waste. Which can all be addressed while still maintaining a positive population growth. Population growth is too essential to human development and emancipation to throw out, unless the...

Convince me that the world IS overpopulated

We are not short of space, and as inefficient as we are at utilizing our space right now we have significant room to decrease our footprint while increasing population. Space and food are the typical constraints on population. So, the problem isn't that we are overpopulated, it is with the...

Convince me that the world IS overpopulated

We aren't overpopulated, so it's hard to do. "Optimal population" is based on consumption and production, but production is not fixed, which is why malthusian claims have always failed. We aren't short on space. We aren't short on food. We aren't overpopulated.

Republicans consider removing Biden from state ballots. A new fad is born.

Pesky thing, history being what it is, though.

Convince me that the world isn't overpopulated

The ever increasing specialization required for most scientific progress is only possible with increased population; more population, more scientists specialized in narrower fields, more advancement. Less and less. The other option would be eugenics, which is fraught to say the least.
