I excavated north of London with a local archaeological society. As far as Jordan goes, while I did explore the country's archaeology I did so in the form of personal travel instead of work. I traveled to various Jordanian archaeological sites, and also trekked the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea rift.

I was also looking at your thread, it seems very interesting. While I'm generally swamped with work and studies at the moment, I would love to try and find some time to discuss at least selected sites from the book. What did you had in mind as a 'project' for this thread?

Hi Bismilla, I moved back for practical reasons. My wife and myself could buy the kind of apartment we like more easily in Israel, and job prospects as an archaeologists are more promising at the moment. However, we are not really tied to Israel, we may decide to move to Southern France in the future, or at least buy a summer house there.

I generally LOVE London. There is plenty for me to do there, and the cultural life is amazing. There is also a Jewish community, but I possibly was among the only few Jews to live in Peckham Rye in southeast London, so my area was definitely not in close proximity to the Jewish community. In terms of state, I have to say that the UK seems to be much more 'race obsessed' than Israel. For example wherever I applied to, whether a job, or even a sports club they actually inquire as to what race you are, which I found pretty crazy. The ethnic and class tensions/violence are much rougher in London than in Israel.

Learning the letters sounds like a plan; I can recognise the isolated forms easy, but I do struggle a little bit with some letters when they're joined, seems kind of difficult. I'm comfortable with harakat too.

Yeah, the masjid has its stuff together. The course is actually mixed ages though unless we can get enough interest for a separate class for us adults.

I hope it's not one of the imams teaching, though... I met the one... and I didn't like him. He was a hardliner with a bad personality. :cover:

I'm going to be studying Arabic formally from September in a building nearby (and owned by) the local masjid. I'm looking forward to it, I'll finally be able to write in a language where I don't smudge (I'm left-handed). I'm still kind of nervous since I do feel like I'm going in as a 'true beginner'. Maybe I should be studying it before...

The download of Volume one is complete. However, when I click on the second file to download it, I get a "file not found" message.

The first file is 118 MB. I might just have a slower than usual connection tonight, because -- when I think about it -- I'm pretty sure I've download files of that size faster. Maybe I should complain to my ISP.

Thank you so much for the .pdfs. I have the first one downloading now. It says it will take one hour and 38 minutes! That's the biggest file I've ever downloaded, but no matter -- I have plenty of storage space on this computer. I can't wait to open it!

For me, one of the most beautiful things I experienced was also potentially one of the most deadly. Rodger and I were in a warehouse throwing water on a twelve foot high wall of yellow and white flames. All was cool until the super-heated roof above us began to catch fire. The fire rolled from the wall of flames right over our heads and threatened to come down behind us. That would have trapped us in the warehouse with no way out. Roger looked at me and said, "Stay calm! Stay calm! I'm going to shut down the hose and then we'll run for the door!" And that's what we did. We made it out just before the whole hot room exploded into flames.
