    What is god?

is god like a literal being that cares about stuff... IE like a distinct entity with thoughts/feelings/etc or is it something abstract (or something that I don't know)? Like does god care if you stole? Like would he/she/it (I don't know gender of god) be "Bob is a bad person for stealing, and...

What makes something worthy of worship?

I think the problem is that I, and maybe alone in this, find the phrase "I worship those with higher in experience and skill in what I hope for myself" to put it mildly silly. I don't see worship and reverence anything near close to interchangeable. I don't think worship and idolize is...

What makes something worthy of worship?

Probably similar to Idolize.... love unquestioningly and uncritically or to excess

What makes something worthy of worship?

Thats interesting... because I don't think anything make make something worthy of worship... infact I think the whole concept of worship seems juvenile at best and at worst dangerous and destructive to the individual.

What makes something worthy of worship?

So lets say your father falls under that category for sake of argument... do you think it would be fair to say you would worship your father in such a case.

What makes something worthy of worship?

so you are saying "I worship my parents" is not very different to "I love my parents". ... let me try again... For you.

What makes something worthy of worship?

Would you worship your parents if they offered to pay for everything for the rest of your life and let you do whatever you want and bail you out if you do illegal stuff/destroy stuff. To both: Explain why that's worthy of worship... it seems like a complete non-sequitur to me. So your saying...

What makes something worthy of worship?

But I'm not saying what single attribute... and besides I don't see how it's relevant because worship seems like a conscious behavior whereas love is a feeling that one has... unless I'm missing something

What makes something worthy of worship?

Sorry for bump but I just thought of this question again But here's the thing... even if I grant sins etc are not arbitrarily made up by your god (if he exists) just to forgive you. I don't follow the reasoning where just because God forgave all your sins (for sake of argument, legitimate)...

    The Courtier's Reply

So there is a sophisticated view of god such that at least 1 god exist with respect to that view, but if you take the "new atheist" view, no such god exists.... so we're all right and no one is wrong?

Prove it. Ahhh so you do understand the underlining meaning of the "Here is a hand argument"

    SimWorld without suffering

Okay well in that case... the problem with the argument is that it really allows for people to play apologetic to your argument. Like objections like "well if god does this then X could happen and X is bad so god doesn't do it". I know it's a variation on the "god knows all" thing but it solves...

    SimWorld without suffering

I feel like your totally missing my point. in an ideal world all logically valid arguments are persuasive... but then again we have people who are young earth creationist and many other completely illogical positions... Yet it doesn't behoove you to argue with Young Earth creationist on how...

    SimWorld without suffering

really now... whats your goal? to persuade theist and have logically valid arguments or just have logically valid arguments that aren't persuasive? I never said I accepted it as an answer... I'm saying that it's better to address that point first and it's more persuasive to do so.

    SimWorld without suffering

Well no... the problem with that line of reasoning is that they can just assert that god has more information than you so anything that LOOKS malevolent is actually for the greater good. That's the pitfall of your argument... and "the problem of evil/suffering argument" I don't really like the...
