Men have authority over women

Prometheus

Semper Perconctor
Genesis 3:16

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

This was a curse on women from God. Because we know that childbirth is still painful, the curse must still be in effect. So Christians must accept that, when married, men and women are not equal partners. The man is in charge.

If you don't have a problem with men having authority over women, then you are a true Christian. If you think men and women should be equals in marriage, you're not a true Christian.

I may not agree on the exposition of this verse. However, I agree that this is a very applicable verse in light of the other Thread! The hostility of the LDS women and other women shown with their responses, shows the truth of Genesis 3:16. This is biblical theology played out on this forum site. God cannot lie and God cannot be mocked. Biblical truths are absolute, regardless if you personally agree or not. Everybody here is but dust, and our life is but a vapor. The bottom line... God is God and you are not. God is infinite and you are finite. - BT

The Christian patriarchal idea of male dominance and female subjugation finds continuity in the paradigm of Evolutionary psychology, if one studies it.

Whether by the Divine intent of GOD or directional/adaptive changes of Nature, it appears we cannot avoid the patriarchal modus operadi no matter where we turn.

But in practice the emancipation of Women socially has proven effective.

Christians tend now to interpret the OT allegorically or metaphorically, as Theologians do, so there is less of a case for the virulent Father-rule of old, which is neither productive, pleasant nor righteous.

However, the Biblical Literalists (fundies etc) do still follow the delineation of Christ as Head of the Church (the Bride) and thus the Man as head of the Wife (and family by extension). But they are not to be taken seriously unless armed...their kind will become less and less influential as the years go on.

If the bible endorses and encourages such inequalities how can we believe or trust that any of it is for the good of mankind?

  1. Matthew 19:4 (Whole Chapter)
"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' [ Gen. 1:27]
  2. Mark 10:6 (Whole Chapter)
"But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' [ Gen. 1:27]
  3. Galatians 3:28 (Whole Chapter)
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Yet it tells me i should treat my girlfriend as inferior to me? Trust me if I did that i would end up in extreme agony.
It seems like the bible is contradicting itself here? Or am i misinterpreting it? (Most likely)

In my humble opinion, you have to read the Bible as a whole. Get the "Big" picture so to speak and look at the context in which words were said. Also one would do well to know the history of the peoples in the Bible and they're culture and customs.
That would probably be the best way of getting an accurate meaning from the Bible.

If not...people can just take what verses they want from the Bible and twist it and turn it to they're own heart's desire.

You haven't mentioned the curse that befell men. Men too were cursed. Men were cursed with hard labor and work...they too were cursed with physical woes.

This is what Christ has to say about men and woman in marriage...

"But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh, so then they are no longer two, but one flesh." - Mark 10:6-9

Christ's plan was for husband and wife to join in an equal union. Husband and wives are to honor each other but first and foremost, honor God in their actions.

Women are instructed to honor their husband but husbands are also instructed within the Bible to honor their wives as well.

"You're taking it out of context." This is such a common answer, but people who use it rarely show how it's out of context.

This isn't just some ancient scribe saying this. It's God. If God said this then we have no reason to ignore it for the sake of "the whole."

Either God did say this and men are to rule over women or God didn't say this and the Bible is fallible. If it is the former, God is sexist. If it is the latter, there is no reason to believe anything the Bible claims.

Prometheus, maybe if you read my post as a "whole", you will get its meaning as a "whole". :D

If you want to just take this one little verse in the Bible and exclude the rest....that's your business. But I'm sure you already know this.

Why would God even mention such a thing though?
Doesn't this mean everyone can just reject the bits they don't like of the bible?

I personally, would not take everything in the bible literally. If anything, women should have superiority over men. They are the bearer of children, and fundimental for a working, stable family. Men are important too, but I think women dont get the recognition they deserve. Also, I dont think the bible was intended to be taken literally, COMPLETELY. Just my opinion though

Christ shed blood for BOTH man and woman, so that they could be reconciled for God.

I'd say things are pretty equal.

A sinful man is no more or less than a sinful woman.

So you pick the parts of the bible you like and live by those bits, and ignore the parts you don't like?

Just because the bible puts men in charge is not carte blanche to exploit them. You are to cherish your family and put them ahead of you. Love is not boastful or unkind.

You are to lead your family by example. You are to provide for your family with love, understanding and fairness.

My wife makes most of the house hold decisions. We make major decisions together.
In over 30 years of marriage, I have put my foot down twice. My Wife admitted later that I ended up being right both times that I did this. I'm ahead of the odds and really don't want to push the issue. If she ever put her foot down, most likely I would defer to her decision.

The bible clearly states that being the head of a household is not to be abusive and controlling. You had better put your family first if you want to be the leader of your household long.

Who are you asking?

I'm more or a less a literalist when reading scripture.

Christ instructed men and women to treat each other equally. God cursed BOTH man and woman. Where is the inequality? I'm not picking and choosing what to and to not believe.

My beliefs are biblically justified.
