WHERE IS THE SCRIPTURE THAT SAYS GOD'S 4th COMMANDMENT IS ABOLISHED?

Aside from which, nothing in the Bible describes the 7th as Saturday. It would depend on what day you started to count. The point was to remember to rest 1 day in 7. It surely can't bother God if not everybody on the planet all rests at exactly the same time. (They couldn't, anyway, since the earth is a globe, and daylight starts 12 hours later halfway round - something else the Biblical God didn't seem to know.)
Well exactly.

This whole thread strikes me as an excuse to slag off most of Christianity, by someone who is part of an exclusivist sect and is seeking out reasons to exclude most of Christendom. It's pretty daft, in my opinion, and not particularly pleasant.

Good luck with that. Xians will just point to 'church doctrine' as if that's from G-d.
Even Yeshua's words can't contradict 'church doctrine' it seems. I gave up long ago.

Even JEWS, who were given them, don't observe all 613 as many are conditional. Require a temple or some other.

Your bonus question is stupid, Shabbat belongs to G-d, man honors it (and G-d) or not.
The bonus question you consider stupid is the actual words of Christ in the gospel.;)

Nor is it Saturday linked. As @Evangelicalhumanist points out, nothing tells us which day of the week should be treated as the allegorical seventh day of creation. It is all rather ridiculous to make such an issue of which day of the modern week we use. There are many far more important issues than this, surely?

Not allegorical at all, for 40 years mana never came on the seventh day. Unless you Xians deny that too, would not surprise me.

No, it's not. You just don't understand the Hebrew.
You are claiming the bible translators, over the centuries, have all got the Genesis story wrong, then.

What did they get wrong, in your opinion, and how des that affect whether we should read it as allegorical or not?

Just wondering where is the scripture that says Gods 4th commandment seventh day Sabbath has been abolished…
This may help: Acts of the Apostles 15. In verses 28 & 29, we can read the Apostles’ decision.
…we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a holy day of rest in honor of the resurrection of Jesus?
I don’t know of a Scripture, pertaining to Christians, advocating one specific day.
We should honor it all the time…. But honoring it, doesn’t require rest. It requires living your life in a way that Jehovah God approves. — Romans 12:1-3, etc.

Hi Kenny, there is no scripture that says that every day is a Sabbath or that Gods law is now fulfilled so that we do not have to obey it (see Matthew 5:17). Exodus 20:10 says that "the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God". Disobedience to Gods law according to the scriptures is sin (see Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4) and according to James in James 2:10-11 if we break any one of Gods 10 commandments including Gods seventh day Sabbath we stand guilty before God of sin and breaking all of Gods laws. I agree with you that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. He is our creator and made the Sabbath for all mankind (Mark 2:27-28). Sunday worship on the other hand as a replacement for Gods 4th commandment is a man-made teaching and tradition that has led many away from God and His Word to break the commandments of God against the very warnings of Jesus in Matthew 15:3-9.

God bless
Thanks for the blessing. :) May your steps be ordered by Him! Think about it, there was no Sabbath for Adam... every day was a Sabbath with God. An everlasting Covenant of rest.

Romans 14:5 PHILLIPS Again, one man thinks some days of more importance than others. Another man considers them all alike. Let every one be definite in his own convictions. If a man specially observes one particular day, he does so “to God”. The everlasting covenant of rest.

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

The year of Jubilee was as full year of a Sabbath and it represents that we are returned to complete union with God as was Adam before he sinned.

And imagine if a doctor or a persona like unto you that works at the hospital and they said, "I would love to work on your appendix but please don't let it burst for the next 24 hours... I'm on my Sabbath".

No Sabbath day since Pentecost because Jesus fulfilled the temporary Mosaic Law - Romans 10:4
Hi nice to meet you. Where is the scripture that says there is no Sabbath commandment since Pentecost. Where is the scripture that says that Gods 10 commandment are temporary? There is none! According to the scriptures in the new covenant Gods 10 commandments have the same role they always have and that is to give us the knowledge of good (moral right doing when obeyed) and evil (moral wrong doing when disobeyed); sin (moral wrong doing when disobeyed) and righteousness (moral right doing when obeyed) see Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4 and Psalms 119:172. The context of Romans 10:4 is that of Gods people seeking to establish there own righteousness by keeping the law *Romans 10:1-10 while Paul is speaking in context to Romans chapter 2- 10 which is that the purpose of Gods law is to show us that we are all sinners in need of God salvation and that all of us stand guilty before God of breaking Gods law with the penalty of sin and death (see Romans 3:8-23; Romans 6:23). Romans 10:4 is not saying that Gods 10 commandments have been abolished it is saying that the only way we can be made right by the law is to seek Christ who paid the penalty of our sins for breaking the law. Gods Word does not teach lawlessness (without law). That would be sin which is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4) and the scriptures teach if we continue in known unrepentant sin we do despite to the Spirit of Gods grace and are in danger of the judgement to come *Hebrews 10:26-31. So you might want to check what your posting here. It is not biblical.
I think it was Constantine, Not Scripture, that set up Sunday. Sunday as a rest day for farmers. Also, Jesus taught to only remember him by his day of death - Jewish calendar month of Nisan the 14th day.- Luke 22:19
Jesus did not say to only remember Him by His death. If you are talking about the Passover we are to do these acts in remembrance of Him. It says nothing about abolishing Gods 4th commandment and making Sunday a Holy day of rest in its replacement. Sunday worship as a replacement for Gods 4th commandment is a man-made teaching and tradition that has led many away from God and His Word to break the commandments of God against the very warnings of Jesus in Matthew 15:3-9.

Take Care.

Yes, I too find there is a Sabbath resting for God's people - Hebrews 4:9-11
Context is to Gods seventh day Sabbath created from the foundation of the world which is defined as "Gods rest/My rest/His rest that only those enter into by believing and following what Gods Word says (see Hebrews 4:1-5).
Those who choose to obey Christ enjoy ' a Sabbath resting from -> their own works ' - Romans 10:4
No one keeps the Sabbath or enters into Gods rest by not believing and obeying what Gods Word says. This is the context and warning given in Hebrews 3:8-19 continuing into Hebrews 4:1-11. As posted earlier Romans 10:4 in context to Romans chapter 2 to 10 and Romans 10:1-10 is stating we cannot be righteous by keeping the law when we have already broken the law. We need to have faith in Christ to receive Gods forgiveness for our sins because we have all broken the law and as guilty sinners condemned by the law that is where the law leads us to Christ so that we can receive Gods forgiveness through faith (see Galatians 3:22-25).
Tiresome works to having the joy of doing 'spiritual work' as Jesus did - Luke 4:43; Matthew 24:14. Hebrews chapter 4 shows God's 7th Day ,or Rest Day from His creative works, was still ongoing, thus God's Rest Day is thousands of years long. (side note: all of the 6 creative days are summed up by the word ' day' at Genesis 2:4)- Hebrews 4:3; Hebrews 4:6; Hebrews 4:10
There is nothing in the scriptures that support anything you are stating here. If you believe that is not true lets discuss it further.
God's 7th Rest Day will come to end at the end of Jesus' coming thousand-year reign over Earth. Matthew 12:8; Revelation 20:1-6; Revelation 21:1-4
It says no where in scripture that the seventh day rest will come to an and none of the scripture reference you provided here do not support your claims. Let me ask you which scripture says what you just stated that "the 7th day rest will come to en end at the end of Jesus coming?" - Not a single one! We read however in the scriptures in the new heavens and the new earth Gods people will continue to keep the Sabbath in the new earth (see Isaiah 66:22-23).

Take Care.

Many hold that perspective of spiritualized Israel, but I don’t see that the scriptures support this idea. You may find the following article interesting…
I am kind of stunned and surprised to hear anyone claim that they cannot see any scripture that states that Gods Israel in the new testament are now all those who through faith are born again into Gods new covenant promise to believe Gods Word. Here lets put up the scriptures for discussion and test what you are claiming here...

GOD'S ISRAEL ARE ALL THOSE WHO BELIEVE AND FOLLOW GOD'S WORD (The Church)

There is no such thing as Jew or Greek anymore. All who believe and follow God's Word are one in Christ. Israel in the OLD COVENANT were those from the seed of Abraham. In the NEW COVENANT, if you are in Christ then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise...
  • EPHESIANS 2:11-13 [11], Why remember, that you being in TIME PAST Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
  • [12], That AT THAT TIME [in the Past] YOU WERE WITHOUT CHRIST, BEING ALIENS FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF ISRAEL, STRANGERS FROM THE COVENANT OF PROMISE, HAVING NO HOPE, AND WITHOUT GOD IN THE WORLD: [13], BUT NOW IN CHRIST JESUS, YOU WHO WERE FAR OFF ARE MADE NEAR BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST.
  • GALATIANS 3:28-29 [28], THERE IS NEITHER JEW NOR GREEK, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: FOR YOU ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS AND IF YOU BE CHRISTS, THEN YOU ARE ABRAHAM'S SEED FOR YOU ARE ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS [29], and IF YOU BE CHRISTS, THEN ARE YOU ABRAHAM'S SEED, AND HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE.
  • God's true ISRAEL in the NEW COVENANT are not by name only but all those in Christ. Those of the FLESH (sinful human nature) are not Abrahams seed but those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God in Christ are God's ISRAEL...
  • ROMANS 9:6-8 [6], FOR THEY ARE NOT ALL ISRAEL WHICH ARE OF ISRAEL,: [7], NEITHER, BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SEED OF ABRAHAM, ARE THEY ALL CHILDREN: but in Isaac shall thy seed be called <Christ> [8], That is, THEY WHICH ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE FLESH, THESE ARE NOT THE CHILDREN OF GOD: BUT THE CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE <those who believe> ARE COUNTED FOR THE SEED.
God's ISRAEL are all those in CHRIST that have been given a NEW HEART according to the NEW COVENANT promise...
  • ROMANS 2:28-29 [28], FOR HE IS NOT A JEW WHICH IS ONE OUTWARDLY; NEITHER IS THAT CIRCUMCISION, WHICH IS OUTWARDS IN THE FLESH: [29], BUT HE IS A JEW WHICH IS ONE INWARDLY; and CIRCUMCISION IS OF THE HEART, IN THE SPIRIT, AND NOT IN THE LETTER; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
In the NEW COVENANT all those in Christ are are God's ISRAEL...
  • COLOSSIANS 3:11 [11], WHERE THERE IS NEITHER JEW NOR GREEK circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: BUT CHRIST IS ALL IN ALL.
  • ROMANS 10:11-13 [11], For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. [12], FOR THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JEW OR GREEK: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. [13], FOR WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.
The New Covenant is for God's Israel...
  • EZEKIEL 36:26-27 [26], A NEW HEART WILL I GIVE YOU, AND A NEW SPIRIT WILL I PUT WITHIN YOU; AND I WILL TAKE AWAY THE STONY HEART OUT OF YOUR FLESH, AND GIVE YOU A HEART OF FLESH. [27], AND I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU, AND CAUSE YOU TO WALK IN MY STATUTES AND YOU SHALL KEEP MY JUDGEMENTS AND DO THEM.
and again...
  • JEREMIAH 31:33-34 [33], BUT THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL; After those days, says the LORD, I WILL PUT MY LAW IN THEIR INWARD PARTS,AND WRITE IT IN THEIR HEARTS; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. [34], And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, says the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Paul proclaims it here...
  • HEBREWS 8:10-12 [10], BUT THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL; After those days, says the LORD, I WILL PUT MY LAW IN THEIR INWARD PARTS, AND WRITE IT IN THEIR HEARTS; and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11], And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [12], For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
The new covenant is for God's Israel which represent those who believe and follow god’s word.
If you are not part of God's Israel then you are not a part of the new covenant (Hebrews 8:10-12).

............

CONCLUSION: According to the scriptures in the new covenant God's Israel (the Church) are all those who believe and follow God's Word * Ephesians 2:11-13; Galatians 3:28-29; Romans 9:6-8; Romans 2:28-29; Colossians 3:11. If you are not a part of God's Israel you have no part in the new covenant *HEBREWS 10:26-27. Gentiles are now grafted in *ROMANS 11:13-27. So the Sabbath being a sign forever to God's people and continues to be so forever just as it is written.

Plenty of scripture don't you think?

Take Care.

Hey InChrist, thanks for your response. I would like to look at Hebrews 4:9 in a lot of detail so first I might just start in all respect by looking at what you have posted here and they I would like to look at the complete context of Hebrews 4:9 starting from Hebrews 3:8-19 and Hebrews 4:1-11. So my response to you here might be over 3-4 posts.
Alright; Hebrews 4:9 Since verse 4 is not in isolation I think it’s important to consider the context of the entire chapter and book. Hebrews, as the title indicates, was written to the Hebrews. The Hebrew believers were those of Israel with a religious background rooted in the OT and the law. Hebrews 4:9 says, “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God”. Why does it say this? Didn’t the Hebrews already keep the 7th day Sabbath? The answer is, yes they did. The previous verse says, For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. Hebrews 4:8 So if there already was a rest ( the Sabbath) what is the rest that remains? The point of Hebrews 4:9 as well as the chapter and entire book of Hebrews is that everything a believer needs, including rest is found only through belief in Christ. The Sabbath was simply a foreshadowing of the final and complete everyday rest in Jesus Christ.
You will find the answer to your questions here answered for you in Hebrews 3:8-19 and Hebrews 4:1-5 which I will discuss in detail in a new post. The reason simple was that according to Hebrews 3:8-19 and Hebrews 4:1-5 is that Gods people in the wilderness did not enter into Gods rest defined in Hebrews 4:3-4 as the seventh day Sabbath created from the foundation of the world because they did not believe and obey Gods Word. If you notice specifically in Hebrews 4:3 it states that Gods Sabbath rest (seventh day) is not a future rest to come but a rest we receive by believing and obeying God with Hebrews 4:9 stating in the Aramaic "Therefore it remains (left behind) for the people of God to keep the Sabbath." I will go into this in detail proving this from defining what rest is being talked about in Hebrews 3:8-19 and Hebrews 4:1-11 which you will see is the seventh day Sabbath of creation defined as Gods rest.
On a side note, a common error concerning the subject of keeping the 7th day Sabbath is the concept that the Sabbath was the day of worship. Some hold that God requires the church service to be held on Saturday, the Sabbath day. But that is not what the Sabbath command was in the OT. The Sabbath command was to do no work on the Sabbath day (Exodus 20:8-11).
Yes and no. Gods 4th commandment is a memorial of creation "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy" - Exodus 20:8. It points backward as a memorial of creation in Genesis 2:1-3. It is also a day of rest where no work is to be done (see Exodus 20:8-11). It has always been considered by the Jews to be a day of worship and Jesus and the Apostles also went to Church as their habit was and kept the Sabbath by worshiping God on the Sabbath day through reading the scriptures and prayer and singing hymns (see Luke 4:16; Acts 17:2). You may also want to consider that the Sabbath is linked to worship in the new earth in Isaiah 66:22-23 "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, said the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, said the LORD. So Sabbath is linked to worship according to the scriptures and Jesus and the Apostles are our examples here. There will be a more detailed response to come that I would like you to consider and respond to when you have some time.

God bless.

QUOTE="InChrist, post: 8045324, member: 29797"]Alright; Hebrews 4:9 Since verse 4 is not in isolation I think it’s important to consider the context of the entire chapter and book. [/QUOTE]
Lets look at the complete scripture context of Hebrews 3:8-19 to Hebrews 4:1-11. Hebrews 3 and Hebrews 4 is a warning to us that we should not harden our hearts in unbelief and sin or God will forsake us *see Hebrews 3:12-13; 14; 17-19; Hebrew 4:1-2;6; 11. Here let's look at the scriptures in detail here and not try and read into the scriptures (eisegesis) what that the scriptures are not saying or teaching.

GOD'S WARNINGS AGAINST SIN AND UNBELIEF AND BREAKING THE SABBATH HEBREWS 3 and HEBREWS 4

Let's look at the scriptures in detail...
  • Hebrews 3:8-19 8, HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS, AS IN THE PROVOCATION, IN THE DAY OF TEMPTATION IN THE WILDERNESS: 9, When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. 10, Why I WAS GRIEVED WITH THAT GENERATION, AND SAID, THEY DO ALWAYS ERR IN THEIR HEART; AND THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN MY WAYS. 11, SO I SWORE IN MY WRATH, THEY SHALL NOT ENTER INTO MY REST. 12, TAKE HEED, BROTHERS, LEST THERE BE IN ANY OF YOU AN EVIL HEART OF UNBELIEF, IN DEPARTING FROM THE LIVING GOD. 13, But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; LEST ANY OF YOU BE HARDENED THROUGH THE DECEITFULNESS OF SIN. 14, For we are made partakers of Christ, IF WE HOLD THE BEGINNING OF OUR CONFIDENCE STEADFAST TO THE END; 15, While it is said, To day if you will hear his voice, HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS, as in the provocation. 16, For some, when they had heard, did provoke: however, not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. 17, BUT WITH WHOM WAS HE GRIEVED FORTY YEARS? WAS IT NOT WITH THEM THAT HAD SINNED, WHOSE CARCASSES FELL IN THE WILDERNESS? 18, And to whom swore he THAT THEY SHOULD NOT ENTER INTO HIS REST, BUT TO THEM THAT BELIEVED NOT? 19, So we see that they COULD NOT ENTER IN BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF.
KEY POINTS TO NOTE...
  • Hebrews 3:8 A warning not to harden our hearts to God's Word
  • Hebrews 3:9-10 Those in the wilderness tempted God 40 years and did not obey him or his ways
  • Hebrews 3:11 God swore they would not enter into "His Rest" (Genesis 2:1-3; see Ezekiel 20:10-13)
  • Hebrews 3:12 Another warning not to harden our hearts in unbelief departing from God
  • Hebrews 3:13 Encourage one and other lest we harden our hearts in sin (breaking Gods' law 1 John 3:4)
  • Hebrews 3:14 We are only partakers of Christ "IF" we hold the the faith steadfast to the end
  • Hebrews 3:15-17 More warnings not to harden our hearts as those who sinned died in the wilderness
  • Hebrews 3:18-19 God did not let them enter into "His rest" because they were in unbelie
Note: Hebrews 3 and it's link to Ezekiel 20:10-13 how God's people were breaking "His Sabbath" and God poured out his judgements on them...
  • Ezekiel 20:10-13 [10], Why I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt and BROUGHT THEM INTO THE WILDERNESS. [11], and I GAVE THEM MY STATUTES, AND SHOWED THEM MY JUDGMENTS, WHICH IF A MAN DO, HE SHALL LIVE IN THEM. [12], MOREOVER ALSO I GAVE THEM MY SABBATHS, TO BE A SIGN BETWEEN ME AND THEM THAT THEY MAY KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD THAT SANCTIFY THEM. [13], BUT THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL REBELLED AGAINST ME IN THE WILDERNESS: THEY WALKED NOT IN MY STATUTES AND DESPISED MY JUDGMENTS WHICH IF A MAN DO THEY SHALL LIVE IN THEM AND MY SABBATHS THEY GREATLY POLLUTED: THEN I SAID I WOULD POUR OUT MY FURY ON THEM IN THE WILDERNESS, TO CONSUME THEM.
Note: Hebrews 3 and it's links to Psalms 95:2-11 and Ezekiel 20:10-13 which is also over worshiping God as the God of creation and the Sabbath commandment and not entering God's rest (the seventh day created from the foundation of the world)...
  • Psalms 95:2-11 [2], Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise to him with psalms. [3], For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. [4], In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. [5], The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. [6], O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. [7], For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if you will hear his voice, [8], Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: [9], When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. [10], Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: [11], To whom I swore in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
Note the link back to what Hebrews 3 is quoting....
  • Psalms 95:2-7 is worshiping the only true creator God of heaven and earth
  • Psalms 95:8 "Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the wilderness (see Hebrews 3:8)
  • Psalms 95:9 "When your fathers tempted me 40 years" (see Hebrews 3:9)
  • Psalms 95:10 40 years Gods' people did not know God's ways (Hebrews 3:10)
  • Psalms 95:11 Because God's people did not know God's ways they did not enter His rest (Hebrews 3:11)
.................

Summary: Hebrews 3 is has links to Ezekiel 20:10-12 and is directly quoting from Psalms 95 which is about worshiping the only true God and creator of heaven and earth. God's people did not know God's ways and broke His Sabbaths and God did not give them His rest. They could not enter into God's rest because of unbelief and sin and God poured out His judgements on them because they broke his Sabbaths and they died in the wilderness because of their unbelief and sins.

Let's define what Gods' rest/My rest/His rest is from the scriptures in the next post

more to come...

Continued from previous post on Hebrews 3:8-19 to Hebrews 4:1-11

WHAT IS GOD'S REST OF HEBREWS 3 and HEBREWS 4?
  • HEBREWS 4:1-11 [1], LET US THEREFORE FEAR, LEST, A PROMISE BEING LEFT US OF ENTERING INTO HIS REST, ANY OF YOU SHOULD SEEM TO COME SHORT OF IT. [2], FOR TO US WAS THE GOSPEL PREACHED, AS WELL AS TO THEM: BUT THE WORD PREACHED DID NOT PROFIT THEM, NOT BEING MIXED WITH FAITH IN THEM THAT HEARD IT. [3], For WE WHICH HAVE BELIEVED DO ENTER INTO REST, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into MY REST: ALTHOUGH THE WORKS WERE FINISHED FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD. [4], For he spoke in a certain place of the SEVENTH DAY on this wise, And God did rest the SEVENTH DAY from all his works. [5], And in this place again, If they shall enter into MY REST.
KEY POINTS FROM THE SCRIPTURES OF HEBREWS 4:1-5
  • Hebrews 4:1 More warnings to fear if we do not enter into "His rest" if we fall short of it.
  • Hebrews 4:2 Because unto us was the gospel preached as well us unto them but they did not believe
  • Hebrews 4:3 We who believe (present tense) enter into God's rest from the foundation of the world
  • Hebrews 4:4 Reference of Hebrews 4:3 is to the Gods' Sabbath rest of the "seventh day" (Genesis 2:1-3)
  • Hebrews 4:4-5 God's rest is the seventh day Sabbath of creation that we enter into by faith (Genesis 2:1-3)
NOTE: Context in Hebrews 4:1-5 is God's Rest from the seventh day Sabbath from the foundation of the world (v4-5) and those who enter Gods rest by and believing and following Gods Word [the gospel] who enter into God's Sabbath rest as God did on the seventh day of the week. The context here defining God’s rest/My rest/His rest is to God’s seventh day Sabbath rest created at the foundation of the world that those who believe or do not believe God's WORD do or do not enter into. The new testament writer of Hebrews is warning us that if we do not believe and follow God's Word (the gospel) and continue in sin and unbelief (Hebrews 3:10-13; 18-19) we will never enter into God's rest (His Rest/My Rest) which is defined as the "seventh day" Sabbath rest in Hebrews 4:1-5. There are two rests here. One is to the rest we enter into by believing and following Gods Word which is our rest and the rest we enter into by believing and following God’s Word to God’s rest which is the seventh day Sabbath. Hebrews 4:3-5 defines God's rest by saying [3], For we which have believed do enter into rest (our rest from or the gospel rest of believing and following God's Word), as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest (God's rest): although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. [4], For he spoke in a certain place of the "seventh day" on this wise, And God did rest the "seventh day" from all his works. [5], And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest ("seventh day").

[6], Seeing therefore it remains that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: [7], Again, he limits a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. [8], For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. [9] SO THEN, IT REMAINS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD TO KEEP THE SABBATH. [10], For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from his. [11], Let us labor therefore to enter that rest, [God’s REST the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH] lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief [rejecting God’s WORD and sin; Hebrews 3].

KEY POINTS OF HEBREWS 4:9

Now notice Hebrews 4, verse 9: “SO THEN, IT REMAINS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD TO KEEP THE SABBATH.” In verses 1, 3, 4 and 8, the Greek word for “rest” is katapausin. It means “rest.” But in verse 9, the Greek word for “rest” is sabbatismos, which is a Hebrew word—Sabbat, which means “the Sabbath”—combined with a Greek suffix—ismos, which means “a keeping of” or “a doing of.” Put together, sabbatismo means “a keeping of the Sabbath.” When correctly translated, Hebrews 4:9 should read, “There remains therefore a keeping of the Sabbath to the people of God.”

According to the Greek and scripture contexts of Hebrews 3:7-19 and Hebrews 4:1-9, Hebrews 4:9 is in regards to God’s seventh day Sabbath of the 4th commandment which in the context of Hebrews 4:1-5 which defines God’s rest/My rest/His rest (Hebrews 3:11; 18-19; Hebrews 4:1; 3; 5; 10) as the “seventh day” from the foundation of the world *Hebrews 4:3-4.

…………..

Hebrews 3:7-19 to Hebrews 4:1-11 is warning us that if we do not believe and follow God's Word (the gospel) and we continue in sin and unbelief (Hebrews 3:10-13; 18-19) we will never enter into God's rest (His Rest/My Rest) which is defined as the "seventh day" Sabbath rest in Hebrews 4:1-5. There are two rests being described. One is our rest we receive through believing and following God's Word (the gospel) *Matthew 11:28-30; Hebrews 4:2-3 and God's rest *Hebrews 3:11; 18; Hebrews 4:1; 3; 5-6; 8-9; 10-11. Hebrews 4:9 THEREFORE IT REMAINS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD TO KEEP THE SABBATH. Why? Because the true seventh day Sabbath rest is a sign of God's true people who God sanctifies to keep all the commandments of God through faith in God's Word *Exodus 31:13; Exodus 31:17; Ezekiel 20:12; Ezekiel 20:20; Revelation 12:17; Revelation 22:14.

................

SUMMARY: God's rest is the "seventh day Sabbath" of creation. Our rest is that of believing and following Gods' Word. No one enters into God's rest (defined in Hebrews as the "seventh day Sabbath") unless they believe and follow Gods' Word (the gospel rest). Of course God's 4th commandment of the 10 commandments (Exodus 20:8-11) are a part of God's Word (the gospel) that God's people who enter into Gods rest believe and follow in Gods' Word just like Jesus did and the Apostles and prophets in Gods' Word. Everything provided here are not my words but have been taken directly from the scriptures which are God's Words not mine (exegesis). The warnings here are very clear. Those who do not believe and follow God's Word in order to continue in a life of known unrepentant sin (breaking anyone of God's commandments - James 2:10-11) just like those in the wilderness do not enter into Gods' rest (seventh day Sabbath) and will be in danger of the judgement to come (Hebrews 10:26-31)

Hope this is helpful.

Acts 15 tells me that I do not need to be circumcised and keep the law to be a Christian and you are telling me that if I do not keep the law when I know it, that I cannot be a Christian.
Hi Brian, I do not think any one has been telling you to be circumcised to keep the laws of Moses are then? By the way Acts 15 is talking about the question is circumcision a requirement for the salvation of new gentile believers. This is the context stated verbatim in Acts 15:1-2 and this was the question Paul and Barnabas were going to Jerusalem to discuss. They were not going to Jerusalem to discuss are Gods 10 commandments still the standard of Christian living. To come up with that interpretation of the scriptures has Paul in contradiction with Paul and the rest of the bible when he states some time latter after the Jerusalem decision to the Corinthians gentile believers in 1 Corinthians 7:19 "Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God. You might want to revisit your interpretation of the scriptures here dear friend.

Take Care.
