Pentagon confirms suspected spy balloon over the U.S. 'right now'

As to Biden's actions. The balloon was not a fast moving threat. China already has satellites up that will take pictures of anything house sized or bigger. The balloon, if it was a spy balloon could have taken pictures of smaller objects, but a simple tarp would prevent them from getting any sensitive information that way. If they did go over such sites. In fact if I was in the military I would have set up dummy tarp sites, just in case. We may or may not ever know if this really was a spy balloon or just a weather satellite gone awry

I noticed that part of its journey took it over Canada, so maybe they were really spying on Canada and not the United States. They were looking for the Canadians' secret hockey training camps.

Pretty sure if it was a weather balloon they'd be easily able to support it.

@Stevicus You know what I think is kind of weird, is this whole thing about blinken canceling his trip because of this. And I've posted about this before, in different posts, about how the political social atmosphere seems to hinge heavily on a sort of mind-reading, subconscious power game system. Blinken can't meet with Xi, because the balloon made him metaphysically more powerful. What else could it come down to?

He might not even mention the balloon to blinken, that doesn't even matter. But amidst the pleasantries, that the otherwise 'gentle conversation' would have, they'd both know about the balloon. Does anyone understand what I mean? Is this paranoia, technically, or is this a real thing? We, the lay public, our often told not to 'read into' things too much, you can find tons of articles about that. But our high-level leaders do seem to operate on the presumption that minute, non-verbal details of all kinds should be read into
It's definitely a thing, an element of politics that has probably existed ever since the first intertribal conflicts.

Yes, I am sure that they could. And if it is one we will probably hear that it is a weather balloon. But if it is a spy balloon we may not hear anything. One thing when it comes to intelligence is that one does not want a potential enemy to know how much we know.

It seems to me that the balloon had more value at disrupting us and creating misinformation from within to sustain those disruptions than as an intelligence gathering device.

Someday there will be a book such as a memoir or biography that reveals what the balloon is for.
That would be interesting to find out.

Talk of spy satellites reminds me of a bit I recall from comedian Mort Sahl. He asked how did the Russians sight the US spy plane to shoot it down in 1960. They looked down and saw it.
