A.J. Foyt Racing changes car number over white supremacy concerns

We Never Know

How far are things going to eventually go? What's next.. Anything with the number 13 because its gang affiliated with MS-13?

"A.J. Foyt Racing recently announced that rookie driver Benjamin Pedersen would drive their No. 88 car for the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series season. However, after getting feedback regarding what that number means to white supremacists, they’ve announced a change.....

“After the reveal of the No. 88 livery last week, it was brought to our attention that the combination of our two individually entered numbers carries certain ideologic and symbolic references,” read a tweet from the racing team. “AJ Foyt Racing does not condone nor support any such ideologies or symbols, and to avoid any reprehensible associations, we have changed the entry number from 88 to 55.”

88 is a white supremacist numerical code for showing support to Adolph Hitler, leader of the Nazis."

I guess they must eliminate the number from all educational institutions and ban the number from all math classes going forward.

There's nothing wrong with 88. Jeeze Louise people are nuts these days.

Well, seeing as Indy Car racing is just the sort of redneck-petrolhead sport that white supremacists may identify with, it probably does no harm to choose another number if they have the freedom to do so. Makes life a tad simpler for their public relations team, I suppose.

P.S. How many blacks in this picture?

I can understand his reasons for doing it, but it seems almost like giving in. There's nothing wrong with the number; it's just a number. Just because some screwheads have made it into some secret code, it doesn't mean people should stop using it. I think it's because H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, so 88 = HH = "Heil Hitler." Isn't that clever?

I think what they should do is say that the "HH" actually stands for "Howard Hughes."

Right.

Also the 88 club would make a great sponsor.

Not every thing has to be, or must be, associated with racist or bigoted tropes.

I haven't heard the name AJ Foyt, or AJ Foyt racing in such a long time I didn't realize any of it's still around (is Foyt himself still alive?).
But, yeah, probably not a bad idea given that auto racing is heavily white and heavily Southern. Amd if it might attract a chicken then I wouldn't want anything to do with it myself.

It is odd how they try to code stuff like that because the ones I've known don't try to hide or deny it. They usually aren't that bright, but they are often upfront and direct with their views. It's like the Klan and their clandestine greetings. Why? You don't have to be ashamed of that in much of America.

The first race ever IndyCar races took place on 12 June 1909 in Portland, Oregon.

Thats far from being south.

Where is the popularity of auto racing clustered? It's the South and places like Indiana and place where black people could only legally live there for about 40 years.

I don't know about this one. I mean, you can't get more arbitrary than a number.

88 isn't just a number on an Indy car. It's also twice 44. It always comes after 87, and it's always what you get when you subtract 1 from 89.

Forget Indy cars. How many math tests unwittingly support white supremacism?

I mean, seriously, how many folks actually knew that 88 is used in neonazi symbology? I just learned today.

I don't think Nazi's deserve ownership of the number 88. But if we avoid it like the plague, we're kind of handing them ownership of it in a way. I'm not really comfortable giving them that sort of power, really.

In another way, I could really give a **** about an Indy car number being swapped. Whatever. But I'd kind of like to view the number 88 in the pure, innocent way I've always viewed it... before I found this thread. Y'know?

I actually think this is the right move. 88 is a pretty well known number for white supremacist groups, and it's usually used to show silent support for their movements. If you see someone with an 88 tattoo, they are to be avoided

Actually Indy cars are more like Formula one cars. NASCAR is more akin to rally car racing. NASCAR is very heavily into all of those traditional southern faults. They both tend to be just a tad racist.

Actually, Bubba Wallace is a black NASCAR Cup Series driver and is highly supported by other drivers. A popular and talented driver (Kyle Larson) lost his ride for making a racist comment. NASCAR may have the southern redneck stigma, but that have no tolerance for racism in their sport.

To me it appears more the fanbase than the organization. The organization banned the Rebel Flag a couple years ago. That did anger a part of their fanbase.
True. The organization does not appear to be racist. They are far more interested in making money. And they could see that the open racism of some fans, not all of them by any means, was harming the brand and they had to take positive actions to counter it.
