“Why should we stand back and let our biggest trading partner, the country with which we share the longest border … why should we let it become Cuba? Like, why don’t we liberate it?”

I think the U.S. military at some point (I don't recall when it was) made a feasibility study, "just in case" they ever had to invade Canada. I think the conclusion was that we could invade and occupy Canada, but it would never really be controllable. The resistance would make any kind of long-term occupation or attempt at annexation somewhat untenable.

Of course, Carlson was obviously joking and laughing about it, so I don't think Canadians have anything to worry about from America. The worst thing that might happen is America itself might start to unravel, which could spill over into Canada. A lot of American refugees could be heading north if things get too hot down here.

For our Canadian posters here, does America ever make you nervous?

Carlson is a cartoon of a pundit who loves playing absurdist ponderer. I know he is popular among the far right but I'm curious how many take him seriously. To my mind he is irresponsible and loves pushing content to the limit of good taste, but it's about ratings and feeding the far right red meat, keeping them whipped up in a fever pitch.

Possible reasons for not sending armed force into Canuckistan....
1) It's winter.
2) We've not been invited.
3) Border crossing is a really annoying pain in the pigu.
4) We already have a good supply of maple syrup.
5) We can get poutine right here in my town already.
6) Why bother?

You left out hockey. If we controlled hockey, it would be a small step to controlling sport and controlling sport means controlling the world.

There is no controlling hockey.
Players could easily defeat any armed group.
We'd have to send our own players.
Some profanity & violence....

Yes, I am worried. I am not saying the U.S. is preparing an invasion anytime soon. But I have said many times the U.S. is jumping head first into fascism. If your nation becomes a Christian Nationalist fascist regime it will not stop at the border.

The truth is American is already having a harmful effect up here, in subtle ways, and in not so subtle ways (trucker protests).

The U.S. catches a cold, Canada sneezes.

I believe the US tried that once before... it went bad for the US. - No... let freedom ring and let the Canada Trucking Protest continue. :)

A crack troop of us have been training for just this. We have weekly been sweeping our sidewalks pretending to be curling. We have been eating poutine and drinking lLabatt. And most important we have been learning how to say "eh". Please note, it is not as easy as it sounds since it appears to be spelled wrong.

Don't forgot to say, using your nose, vive le Quebec libre.

The Canuck government pretty much squashed that, didn't they.

BTW, my wife and I had tentative plans to go to Canada, which is a 20-minute drive from our place, if I got drafted into the Vietnam "War". I came to believe that the war was highly unethical as I studied it in detail [long story], and there's no way I'd allow myself to be carrying a gun to kill others under these conditions.

BTW, my Dad was an Army vet in the South Pacific for two years under MacArthur after I was born, and I tried to sign up for ROTC as a freshman but had a schedule conflict, so I had to drop it, thank God!!!

I was lucky. I was a bit too young for that war. Health issues such as asthma and allergies would have likely have kept me out of the service anyway. But I had a geology classmate a few years older than me. He was about 6'2 and weight not much more than a buck twenty (120 lbs). Okay, maybe 140 tops. He did get a low number in the draft lottery. But he had a plan. He went on a starvation diet and did show up at about 120 for his physical, all happy and ready to join up. For some odd reason they rejected him. He did gain a little back but he liked being skinny so he was still just a bit heavier when I knew him.
