If you celebrate any version of a holiday this time of year, I hope it is festive, joyous, and full of great food with people you love.:greenheart::christmastree::heart:

How are you preparing? Any fun plans? Are you in charge of making any food? Are you staying home or going somewhere else to visit family?

I'll be delighted to wish everyone a happy Christmas - when we get there. 2 more Sundays in Advent to go, though.

I've made 2 Christmas puddings as usual (now maturing in my cellar), I've bought some foie gras for New Year's Eve (there are a few bottles of Sauternes left in the cellar) and I've ordered a 9ft Christmas tree, for delivery on 20th, which will stay up throughout the 12 days of Christmas, i.e. until Epiphany. I've made enquiries at the butcher about boudins blancs for Christmas Eve, and have been told to check again next week, when they may have some in from France. This year I have some of what I'm told is the correct wine for that (Loire chenin blanc, in this case a Vouvray sec). What I have not done yet is think of a good present for my son: now he's 19 it gets a bit difficult. Nor have I yet sent Christmas cards, though I have bought them, and the Christmas stamps.

I've volunteered to sing with the church choir, for the carol service next Sunday and at Midnight Mass, as they are short-handed. One or two nice carols - I might make a music thread for them later.

This year it seems to have come up on me very fast.

I don't celebrate any holidays at this time of year, since my cultural background doesn't have any. I'm instead thinking of getting gifts for friends who do, including my best friend (who is European) because she's spending Christmas alone this year and feeling sad.

I'm going to try to free myself up on Christmas for her and spend the day with her on Zoom so that she feels less lonely. I'll keep it a surprise, though.

Thanks?
Over the years we've tried to give the children a taste of various mid winter celebrations, for the last few years the children have decided on Saturnalia for nothing more mercenary than they get more presents.

Happy holidays to all

After the 11th, it will be my wind down time, actually.

Navaratri hit in September, and Diwali follows by three weeks. Both of those are extended observances(one 9 days, one 5). Then we had Halloween, and my younger two kids have birthdays three weeks apart. The little guy turns 4 on the 11th, and then I can breathe...

I've limited Christmas stuff this year. I'm just too burned out to continue with it. I will show up for the proper festivities, but I'm not going all out with it anymore.

What are you doing for the festive season? If anything?

You can borrow my cats.

One holiday season with my cats and a Christmas tree(fake or real), and even the most dedicated holiday decor enthusiast will throw in the towel.

The village council puts up a large(ish) tree in the square, it went up on Saturday and is a magnet for cats.

Many religious celebrations around this time of year. The Christians (at least some) start it of with Sinterklaas tomorrow. (Though I have heard that it lost importance in favour of Christmas in the Netherlands. Is that so?)
The pagans will celebrate the solstice sometime around the 21th and then the Christians are at it again on the 24th (here, 25th in the rest of the world).
I'll be with my family for a week to indulge in the traditional gluttony and sloth (even though I'm not Christian).
After that I'm with friends for a long weekend to celebrate the secular turn of the year.

I must be lucky. My cats have almost always left the tree alone this time of year... Minus the occasional drinking of the trees water.
