The quest to save the swastika.

Asian faiths try to save sacred swastika corrupted by Hitler

I think the symbol needs to be reclaimed back to its former meaning throughout Dharmic religions and faiths and shouldn't be decried or banned just because the Nazi regime had stolen and tarnished its religious significance.

Hypothetically, had Hitler used the cross instead of the swastika, would the cross itself be banned and decried?

The swastika needs to be returned and used in its orginal form and context in religion. Basically it needs to be placed back in its proper and orginal place symbolic of peace and good fortune.

The debate is weither one thinks the symbol can be fully restored and be allowed in public venues or is it now too far gone for people to accept its orginal meaning and use.

I hope the Deos will be allowed to place their religious icons back up in their Queens apartment and not be ordered to remove it.

We've got a long way to go...

My niece(14) was looking up swastikas online at school, in their context in Eastern religions. She's an honor student, and is very interested in the topic of culture and religion(hence, why she was looking such stuff up). Her teacher had a cow and tried to make her shut down the site. My niece tried to explain what this was, and where it came from. The teacher was totally unwilling to listen, refusing to see it as anything other than a Nazi symbol.

Many are not familiar with the many disguises of the Christian cross due to Christian persecution.

Yeah, they need to take it back. When I was in Japan the symbol was all over local maps denoting where the Temples were at.

I know that Native Americans used the swastika as well before its symbol was corrupted by the Adolph Hitler and the Nazis.

I don't see us having that discussion in the next 23 years. And probably longer, as long as there are people who want to use it in the most recent meaning it had in history.

It already is. This article illustrates more or less a non-issue; Eastern religions still use their version of the swastika even in America. I've seen them regularly adorning homes of Indian residents when I was a maintenance staff. The problem comes with Western ignorance.

The Nazi's didn't use the Dharmic swastika, as well. They used a variation of the fylfot, a Germanic sunwheel that likely shares the same roots as the Eastern swastika.

An interesting article on how the swastika was "discovered" and how the Nazis coopted it:

The Man Who Brought the Swastika to Germany, and How the Nazis Stole It | History| Smithsonian Magazine
As the article correctly notes, the swastika is a symbol used in many cultures. What it didn't say is that it is also found in Nordic and Germanic symbolism. It is, in a way, a rune. Not representing a letter but the sun. It is that Germanic use which the Nazis based their symbol upon, not the Greek one.

How individuals in the West will react and understand the symbol will depend on their education. Many ignorant people will see a swastika and only recognize one meaning. They might feel emboldened. So education is crucial. It will create debate on social media.

For Hindus like me, this is very old news. I can recall hearing of this topic at least 40 years ago. A symbol that's been used for at least 3000 years simply isn't going to go away easily, despite how ignorant people can't recognise the difference between it and the Nazi one.

I feel the same about the Union Jack (Flag of the UK) it has been claimed by right-wingers and racists and needs to be handed back.
