The last time the British invaded America (that is, a military invasion and not a rock-and-roll invasion) was in the War of 1812, and the last battle we fought with them on our soil occurred after the peace treaty was signed.

But this is how it turned out:

In 1814, we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip'
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We looked down a river
And we see'd the British come
And there must have been a hundred of 'em
Beatin' on the drums
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring
We stood beside our cotton bales and didn't say a thing

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets
'Til we looked 'em in the eye
We held our fire
'Til we see'd their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns
And really gave 'em, well

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Good song but not all that historically accurate.

Except the part about the alligator-cannon, that actually happened.

Boy I hadn't heard that song in a long while. Thanks for posting it.

I love that song. Music is a direct connection and experience with the people of the era.

One of my relatives operated one of those. If you ran out of ammo just throw the thing at a Brit.
The Brits had a little more time. Give the US a few hundred years and, given the recent history, they will out-do the Tommies, eventually.
We need to get busy. We have a record to break, now.

I mean...kinda.
But it was the US who declared war on that occassion. It's neither here nor there in terms of the OP, but it's a war commonly...well...represented in a somewhat strange way by many Americans.

My assumption is you have a pretty good handle on the particulars though.

Yeah, although I took this as a joke thread and ran with it.

Nah...the Brits were helped by being able to assume native peoples didn't count. They've mostly been long since displaced, so the US would need to declare formal wars against places like New Zealand, Greenland, Israel and Canada to get their numbers up.

With the exception of the last four in that list, that seems unlikely.

But actually, the Battle of New Orleans did have somewhat of an effect on how things turned out in the following decades, even if it did happen after the Treaty of Ghent was signed and had no effect on the outcome on the actual war itself.

The American victory over the British caused the Spanish in Florida to sit up and take notice, and it also put more teeth in the Monroe Doctrine when that came about. It established American primacy on the continent and made Americans quite a bit more brazen in moving into Texas than they probably otherwise would have been if they had been defeated in that battle.

And both the British and Americans decided they never wanted to fight each other again. There wasn't really anything to fight about anyway, not anymore.

Yup, no real issues with any of this, and the US was invaded...just that it was done in response to an American invasion of Canada.

Funnily enough, I listed Canada in my jokey post about countries the US would need to invade to catch the Brits, but you've already caught that particular Pokemon.

I watched this a long time ago so my memory may be hazy but isn't this a documentary about the plans of the US?

Good documentary. Now you understand why some incredibly wealthy elites overseas see Europe as a kind of threat, because of its dangerous, wicked socialism...that gives dignity to workers. What a scandal! Dignity to workers! ooooh...
