House GOP backs criminal charges for librarians lending "harmful" books to kids

A short article, as it's title reads. In Idaho, the GOP has strongly put forward a bill calling for jail time (up to a year), plus up to $1,000 fine for librarians who allow children to read "harmful" books. And the anti-Americans (the Republicans) haven't even defined what "harmful" means. (apparently it can simply be a story with a gay main character. Or one that describes arousal in a character in a love story. etc....etc....etc....), but nobody can say for sure, since "harmful" is a completely subjective adjective.

“I recognize that five minutes of one of my kids getting a hold of a friend’s cellphone is more dangerous than anything this bill is going to stop,” said Rep. Greg Chaney (R-Caldwell).
But Chaney said he views the legislation as a way to “stem the tide” of potentially obscene materials getting into the hands of kids.
“This isn’t calling for a book burning out in front of the capitol. This is reasonable,” he said.

The saddest part is that these drooling imbeciles and their imbecilic voters have no idea that their very thoughts go against the constitution of our once great nation.

Wow. $1000 fine on a librarians wage is about 8 months pay...

(J/K, but kinda not too much...)

I know, renting movies irl is dead, but when it wasn't, how were the fines if Blockbuster rented an "A" rated movie to a minor?

Last time I was in a public library (and it wasn't that long ago believe it or not) I discovered they had gone to self-checkout.

Hard to fine the librarian if you can't find the librarian.

So the GOP seeks to make overly obscene material inaccessible to children in libraries, while making it more difficult for activists to target and groom other people’s children.

This really is not a horrible thing. I approve.

If that’s the case then surely they would have outlined the specific books they disprove of.
The OP claims they haven’t
Given the history of the American GOP burning relatively innocent books such as Harry Potter, I find that I can’t give much of a benefit of a doubt. Anti intellectualism reeks from this post and is an embarrassing spectacle to witness on a world stage.
And I say that as someone from a country known for widespread drunkenness

They seem to dislike places of knowledge, i.e., colleges, libraries, etc.

Yeah, books about same sex couples raising families in loving homes. Thank God the gop is protecting kids from such obscene material.

Let's not pretend both parties aren't the face of anti-citizen evil. At this point in wondering if it's like WWE, the dems and reps just laughing maniacally and counting their millions.

Hear hear, we should absolutely ban that hideous book that glorifies slaughter and rape, slavery and genocide, and has poems about lovers that have intimates like donkeys and emissions like horses. I mean sure, it's got dragons and magic, but also multiple end-of-the-world scenarios that are just horrifying to youths and instill deep-seated sense of worthlessness and fear through it's narrative. Fie on the bible, tear it from all shelves! We start with the hotels!

What "overly obscene material"? Did you read the article at all? The GOP could not and would not even define it in Idaho.

Please give us examples of "overly obscene material" and why it is obscene. We might all get a good laugh.

Not too worry. I asked for specific examples. We should soon be given horrific books that evil librarians are forcing on children these days.
