RF as a social outlet

an anarchist

Your local anarchist.
TLDR: For you, is RF a healthy social outlet? It is for me I think.

Occasionally I’ll see someone leave because RF is not a healthy social outlet for them.

For me, both my place of employment and RF prevent me from being a complete hermit. Both keep me integrated with society. I don’t have friends in my day to day life, just acquaintances and coworkers. I just don’t want friends any more, been there done that. I’m barely warming up to the idea of befriending a coworker or two after over a year of working with them. But of RF I can entertain the idea of being friends with some of you. Since we are all interested in religion/spirituality, I can get along with people here.

So for that reason I think it is healthy for me.

How about you, is RF a positive social outlet in your life?

It's hard for me to get used to. The people seem to act a bit differently than the people I'm accustomed to hanging out with. Also, I'm prone to waste too much time, and burn out for that reason.

But I enjoy it. I find people here pretty kind.

RF gives me some of the social contact I need between meeting friends irl. But, too much of a good thing, it can also be a way to procrastinate.

Yes. It serves as a source of humor and a way to be outside my normal "bubble" because there are people like @esmith and @Kenny who post things that represent different viewpoints and occasionally cause me to see if a particular idea could possibly be correct even though it comes from a very different perspective than mine.

The people seem to act a bit differently than the people I'm accustomed to hanging out with.

To elaborate, I'm kind of accustomed to hanging out with people with "dark", very introverted personalities, or might be successful at what they do, but kind of live unhealthy lives due to spending their lives on things like programming projects (I've been known to hang out with programmers). I do find some of these people easy to look up to, though, because they're often smart, just very bleak, and actually tend to accomplish a lot. Because I have a tendency to look up to successful accomplishments, I have in the past found common ground with such people.

RF is diverse, has a different brand of humor and banter than what I'm used to. It feels like I'm in a museum or art gallery, to an extent. People like to argue more, I think.

Part of this could just be "my" problem, of trying to adapt to new environments. But I am getting myself out there more, including posting on RF. I've met a few people who are different than what I'm accustomed to, for sure, both on and off RF. Sometimes it actually works out well.

I also feel RF has taught me about half a dozen or more new things, so there's that.

Thank you... and you are right...

It challenges my thinking too!!!

I think forums in general are a good outlet to exchange thoughts and viewpoints.

Too much I think is unhealthy if the internet makes up your entire life.

It's really unhealthy to cloister oneself in digital media as it skirts reality over time affecting one's perspective.

Mostly true.
But then you run into the occasional poster that makes you feel otherwise.

In real life, I intentionally surround myself with people that agree with me on key issues. This provides me with a good support system.

But RF is how I get my daily dose of opposition.

But familiarity and opposition are important parts of a healthy "social" diet for me. :)
