Quotes:-

Paabo and his team also surprisingly found that gene flow had occurred from Neanderthals to Homo sapiens, demonstrating that they had children together during periods of co-existence," Wedell said.

This transfer of genes between hominin species affects how the immune system of modern humans reacts to infections, such as the coronavirus. People outside Africa have 1-2% of Neanderthal genes.

Paabo and his team also managed to extract DNA from a tiny finger bone found in a cave in Siberia, leading to the recognition of a new species of ancient humans they called Denisovans.

Wedell described this as "a sensational discovery" that subsequently showed Neanderthals and Denisovan to be sister groups which split from each other around 600,000 years ago. Denisovan genes have been found in up to 6% of modern humans in Asia and Southeast Asia, indicating that interbreeding occurred there too.

"By mixing with them after migrating out of Africa, homo sapiens picked up sequences that improved their chances to survive in their new environments," said Wedell. For example, Tibetans share a gene with Denisovans that helps them adapt to the high altitude.

My wife's dna showed her at 4% Neanderthal, which is well above the international average. Maybe that's why she beats me with a club? :emojconfused:

(So many possible replies, but thank God your wife is blessed with such defenses!)
Well, here is one for @metis. (It’s been awhile since I’ve ribbed the man who babysat me.)

I’m surprised your wife fell for you since her Neanderthal DNA is only 1/25th of yours!

(Yes, I know there will be a rejoinder. metis and I have honed this act for a very long time.)

When we consider all the wondrous things going on in the world of medicine these days it is outrageous that the Nobel prize in medicine was given to this. Yes, it is fine work. But I am sure there are many other advances more substantial and deserving recognition. IMHO this award was given for political agenda purpose and not objectively based.

What political agenda do you feel lead to this research receiving the Nobel prize?

It quite well defined that the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology can go to any exceptional work in both medicine and applied biological fields. The work qualifies.
You can see from wiki that the prize has always been awarded in many many types of applied biology fields.
