This myth is based largely on public opinion polls that offer an all-or-none choice between affirmative action as it currently exists and no affirmative action whatsoever. When intermediate choices are added, surveys show that most people want to maintain some form of affirmative action. For example, a recent Time/CNN poll found that 80% of the public felt "affirmative action programs for minorities and women should be continued at some level" (Roper Center, 1995a). What the public opposes are quotas, set asides, and "reverse discrimination." For instance, when the same poll asked people whether they favored programs "requiring businesses to hire a specific number or quota of minorities and women," 63% opposed such a plan. As these results suggest, most members of the public oppose extreme forms of affirmative action that violate notions of procedural justice—they do not oppose affirmative action itself."

Yea that was a big problem. I remember that.

I'm for equal access across all barriers.

If a black person gets higher scores over a white person, the black person gets in. True if the reverse applies.

Society would be better off with the better brain under any and all situations.

As the UNCF states, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste".

One way to address this is to apply the principles of affirmation action to sports. Let us see what will happen if we apply this warm and fuzzy ideology to sports. Many sports are dominated by certain races. It must be a racist conspiracy and not about natural ability. There are sportsmen and women of all races working hard to be the best. But due to an assumed racist conspiracy, not everyone get to play in the major leagues.

So to make this fair for the lessor athletes, who are being discriminated against, we would need to bump some of the "better" athletes and install lessor athletes, based on shallow; superficial, criteria not connected to the needs of sports. This sounds warm and fuzzy, right? Emotionally we all can empathize with the dashed dreams of the lessor athletes, but with our emotions leading our intellect, we will fail to see the consequences in terms of the future of sports.

There is such a thing as natural ability and hard work. This is what makes the great athletes. It is not about who you know. If natural ability and hard work for any given task, separates by race, then this is the natural organic result. If we replace that with shallow criteria, that only appeals to emotions, but not the functional need for sport, the sport will become boring and will decline.

I would hate to watch NBA games with teams that look like a cross section of America is placed on teams, with young and old players, male and female, people with handicaps, short people, etc. just to meet shallow; superficial, criteria, that have nothing to do with the needs of that sport. Sports would decline and the role models that influence younger players would cause a further dumb down. Under that system now you don't need to be good to get on the best team. It become all about politics, and who you know or whose butt you kiss. If you kiss the butt of the Democrats, they will let you skip hard work and ability, to play. I prefer the players set the highest examples and me having to reach higher.

If you look at the University system in the USA, it is becoming indoctrination chambers. This shows a decline in the level of student body and Professor body.This would be harder to do with better student players; smarter, witty and creative, who can reason and challenge, and not just follow the whims of campus politics, to get ahead. If Professors were of a higher quality they would not have force conformity so they can lead. The could lead by example, fi they are the best in their field. They would welcome smart students who look outside the box.

Let us run a ten year pilot test, where natural ability and hard work lead, to see what will happen. Will it pull everyone up and stop the decline in education? Or will Affirmation action sports remain more fun to watch?
