John 3:16

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I think people have really misunderstood what Jesus meant. He's simply saying that if you know who he is then you'll understand how everlasting life is possible. He definately doesn't mean if you don't believe in him you won't have everlasting life. It's really quite simple.

People might say what about John 3:36?
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Again, all that means is they will not have the knowledge reguarding how everlasting life is possible. As far as the WRATH OF GOD, well thats just for dramatic effect. haha. No big deal. It makes for a good read is all.

Sorry, I think it means, if you don't believe what he says, don't reject sin, you will be judged because of your sin and as it is said, the wage of sin is death.

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Mat. 25:46

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

Jesus offers forgiveness and new beginning in righteousness. If person doesn't want that, it is his sin that is the cause for the judgment.

Sorry for being so frank, but while debates arise over the specific meaning of the word "believe" in John 3:16, I've never heard anyone propose such an absurd interpretation of this passage - concluding the exact opposite from what it clearly says. Lest there be further need for affirming what it means, read on through verses 17-18 for the context:

"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son." (NIV11)

In this passage, Jesus is clearly talking about belief in him, not something else.
Another passage affirming salvation and eternal life through Christ is made by Jesus in John 14:6:

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me." (NIV11)

If one rejects Jesus' words, the apostles' teachings, the Bible's numerous references, and 2000 years' worth of church writings, then it's possible I suppose to claim that Jesus isn't the way to salvation and eternal life in heaven. Such a view though could not be rationally supported by misinterpreted passages from the Bible. More correctly, it would be a simple rejection of Christianity and the Bible.

The verse implies that God had a little baby god. Sorry but that just doesn't happen -- God doesn't procreate.

The verse also places an emphasis on the afterlife. I think this is a bad, bad idea. The point is to live THIS life for God, to love him, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We don't obey God because we want to go to heaven. We obey God because he is God, the King of the Universe, and is deserving of our obedience.

I think it is a perversion to say that our afterlife depends on belief rather than our actions. People dont' choose what they believe -- they are either convinced or they are not convinced. It is our behavior which is under our control.
