Due to the undoing war in the Ukraine and associated shortages of energy and food supplies the coming winter in Europe portends to be difficult. If you live in Europe are you making special preparations for the coming winter?

For those making preparations, are you making both food and energy preparations? What sort or energy preparations are you making? Are any of you simply traveling out of Europe for the duration of any shortages?

No preparation needed. I may need to put up with some electricity blackouts if gas is in short supply but all you need for that is a few candles and some warmer clothing because the central heating will cut out. I already have both of those.

It's a tiny price to pay for defending democracy in Europe, which is something we in Europe still believe in, unlike many in the USA, apparently. (And I have a Ukrainian neighbour, so I would be ashamed to complain about a few minor inconveniences.)

Not as special as some need to make,
but I...
- Pre-paid for propane to get a discounted fixed price.
- Collected firewood.
- Plan to install Mr Solar Heater on Mr Shop.

And how do you know this?

Rumors. There are zero answers from Brussels. And so many entrepreneurs have to pay for power bills whose price has skyrocketed. It had already become high at the beginning of the year. In August it did skyrocket.

But won’t the gas and energy shortages also disrupt employment (furloughs or shutdowns) and cause food shortages? Remember Russia just shut down Nord Stream 1 for maintenance. But there is uncertainty of when it will turn back on.

I would like to know how Germans will warm up this winter.
I cannot get it.
It is not a matter of power bills only. It is the raw material that will lack.

I'm not that badly off, given that I have accumulated a nice bank balance (by simply not spending as much as comes in), but this would preferably be used to pay for things that really need doing (house and garden) rather than bolstering the profits of the energy companies. I have electric heating, and as to such, will reduce this usage as to only heating essential rooms - such heating is on a low overnight tariff. I have already reduced the hot water times from an hour a day to 40 minutes for most days with more on any washday. I have also stopped using my freezer. I don't watch too much TV anyway and will restrict this. Being elderly, I will be getting some financial aid for electricity use so that helps. Not desperately worried, given there is a supermarket five minutes away, and I have two microwave cookers, but I can imagine many elderly people are worried - especially as to heating.

I voted ‘No’ before reading your post. My apologies.

That works best for me also, just reducing energy

That's what I did the past few years already (just consume less), so I am well trained now. I was quite radical in reduction, and my energy bills dropped like 90%. I am now working on "eating" the fridge content, so I need even less energy.

I do have quite some food items in my house, so I don't worry about "no food" in the next 6 month or so

Maybe get it from france who currently has over 12 months supply of gas in storage. I feel sure they will share some with a neighbour after all, Germany is in the EU too.

No of course not. There may be some industrial disruption, sure. And there may be a few shortages in the shops. But I remember the 3 day week we had for a while in the 1970s. If things get really tough it could be like that for a while, I suppose. (Russia has probably shut Nordstream 1 for the indefinite future, by the way. All this ballocks about "maintenance" is just lies.)

The good news is even their own far-right extremists are now complaining they are losing the war: ‘We have already lost’: far-right Russian bloggers slam military failures
