Ministry distributes anti-LDS DVDs across state

A ministry opposed to Mormonism distributed 18,000 copies of a DVD to homes across the state on Sunday as part of a nationwide effort to convince members to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The distribution of 15,000 DVDs in Mesa, Gilbert and Tempe was timed for the last weekend before the church holds its General Conference in Salt Lake City on Saturday and Sunday, said Jim Robertson, executive director of Concerned Christians, an organization largely made up of former Mormons.

This makes me incredibly sad, and I'm not even an LDS member. (Though it's been a great honor to get to know members and about the church through these forums.) I'm very sorry that any group would feel that they had a 'calling' to persecute another group like this.

I guess the competition between our "christian neighbors" to scream at us on our own Temple Square is getting too overcrowded so these guys thought they should go attack us in Arizona. Good strategy, they won't have to fight for parking or find some tricky way to get a-hold of some garments to offend us, this way they can drop the DVD and run...

It was to be part of a big blitz distribution all over the country. It pretty much fizzled as many of the people who learned about their secret distribution plans (yes, they did try to keep it secret) didn't get the expected DVD.

The FAIR boards (now mormonapolgetics.org) has a number of threads, and FAIR even managed to get an advance copy (despite the distribution letter packaged with the DVDs to the churches that were passing them out saying not to let a Mormon see the movie until the 25th) and made a large and impressive review/rebuttal of the DVD.

Well, they sound like lovely people, don't they? I dunno. I often start to worry when people describe themselves as "Concerned [fill in group here]."

Although it would depend on what's in the video. From the sound of it, it's pretty unpleasant...if it were generally as pleasant as the Mormons who come around to our door periodically, I suppose it'd just be more proselytizing (in that case, I'd probably say fair's fair), but I highly suspect it isn't.

Isn't it amazing that some people care about what other people are taught in their temples? That is, enough to actually protest?

It's odd that the Mormons are preparing their hearts to worship God, and the opposing Christians are trying to hinder that rather that spread the Gospel either by words or by actions. Even stranger is that the Mormons may have much more in common with the spirituality of the opposing Christians (particularly if they are Protestant) than with just about anyone else, whether religious or not.

oh yes, I went to the Manti Pagent a few times and remember people there. I didn't know there was one in Mesa.

I wonder why the LDS church seems to attract so many. I have lived in the south for almost 3 years and have yet to see any Baptists yelling about the Pentacostals or the other way around...

Yeah, even at the BYU football games. During the summer I drove home for lunch pass the dorms at BYU and there were even people out picketing the 12- to 18-year-olds arriving for EFY Camps. Every week, without fail, they were there. I really considered bringing along some water ballons to throw at them.

The few who did, were proud to do it. Interestingly enough, many of the churches that were approached for aid in the project turned the DVD's producers down flat.

You should have had a pizza sent to them from "Their LDS friends - we thought you might be hungry". It wouldn't be quite as much fun as the water balloons, but it might be more effective

Well thank goodness for that! Until I joined this forum--I had no idea there was anti-LDS feeling out there, or that some organizations didn't consider LDS Christian. Having said that--I am concerned that having Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate will increase the problem. It already seems to be an issue for some and sadly I don't see anything being done to counter it.

This is sad. I don't understand the need to "put down" others' religions.

The only possible reasons I can think of are a) insecurity in your own faith, b) an intollerant character........... Neither is very "nice".

Someone feel free to jump in and correct me here--but isn't this compulsion to be the "One True" religion/denomination--primarily a Judeo/Christian and Muslim issue. Does this tradition come from the Bible( perhaps more specifically the Old Testament)? I seem to recall that Hinduism and Buddism are very tolerant of other beliefs.
