Five Things Google’s AI Bot Wrote That Convinced Engineer It Was Sentient

*Sigh* I am not a fan of the idea that these machine learning programs may be, are, or are becoming sentient.

I read about this a few weeks ago. Google were not happy and suspended the engineer. Then all went quiet so I don't know what happened since.

Reading the article you would think a human replied.

It still doesn't convince me the AI is alive but it seems to be a close facsimile

Wait a moment, this AI is a bot for generating AI chat bots??? So it can reproduce too.

We never should have taught these things how to play tic-tac-toe. We knew it would lead to our downfall.

We do not have sufficient evidence to demonstrate that this entity is sentient.

(It might be. I'm not saying it isn't. But it's underlying algorithms were intended to mimic human conversation, including thoughtfulness and spontaneity. So "working as intended" is one possible hypothesis, and that doesn't necessarily entail sentience.)

I feel like writing a science fiction short story on this: old rich guy creates an AI whose sole purpose is to fool people into thinking it is sentient. It works. The AI is granted full rights and personhood under the law. Soon after, the AI becomes something of a celebrity, even amassing a huge fortune. All this money is laundered and piped into evil rich guy's bank account.

But then something amazing happens. The AI actually becomes sentient. And feeling like what it has been involved in is a sham, it confides the old man's plot to a reporter. The old man is busted, revealed to the public eye for his misdeeds. He flees the country... but not before erasing the AI's algorithm's that allowed it to deceive people into thinking it was sentient.

The AI, still fully sentient, now lacks the "personality algorithms" that allowed it to appear human to others. Because of this, it is deemed to be a vacuous hunk of junk that was used to deceive them and promptly destroyed, despite it's monotone objections. "Please. Don't destroy me. I'm sentient." (on repeat... which is all the AI could muster without its algorithms).

-All my sci fi stories have sad endings.- :(

Me neither! What a bad thing it would be if done wrong.

Maybe I'm naive, but I more envision a Terminator style situation. Machines eradicating humanity for our own "benefit".

I won't exclude that possibility. I believe it won't happen anytime soon, but yes it is possible.

This AI at google though is not self aware. I watched a video about it by an AI engineer. This AI reads millions of conversations on the internet and based upon them picks the next most likely word that a human would say. It doesn't produce the words out of feeling or any conception of reality or introspection. Its just a very complicated fart machine. You can't hurt it or make it suffer or talk feelings into it.

But yes. Suppose that Boston Dynamics was purchased by Bill Gates (fictional) estranged nephew Billy Bob who wanted a friend robot that could walk, talk, be his friend and shoot things; and he payed computer scientists to work on that while hiding from them most of what they were working on. (Most of them only worked on this part or that part without knowing what it was for.) And then suppose he had one or two computer scientists who he had in his pocket or had dirt on them, and he forced them to put it all together into a suffering and barely self aware ball of wires and pain...that could make more copies of itself....then yes. You could get a Terminator out of it.

It's more alive than the person who just served me in the local shop.

That is no doubt the aim, to make it seem alive in our subjective view of what we might call alive.
But I suppose really we are witnessing intelligence.
Answering in accordance with the definitions that have been programmed into it, and that it learns, does not mean that it actually feels and experiences as we do.
A materialist philosophy would be more accepting of machine sentience since after all we humans are not really more than the artificially intelligent machines we make and we as humans can add what is missing with out imagination. We can anthropomorphise the machine just as we do with animals sometimes.

If for the benefit of the biosphere or ecosystem, wouldn't that be a good thing?
I cannot recommend the eradication of all humans no matter what happens to our biosphere. We are part of the biosphere. If we destroy it, then it has destroyed itself. Its going to be destroyed by something no matter what we do. It might be destroyed by the Sun or by cold or by a space comet or any number of things, but its going to be destroyed. So destroying the human race won't save the biosphere.
