My political views might be described as… authoritarian, nationalistic, militaristic, and machiavellian.

Government is a disease masquerading as it's own cure.
Government, ideally, is a Social Contract: "One for all and all for one." It's the way human groups larger than hunter-gatherer bands can exist together harmoniously.
Without government it's every man for himself, and dog-eat- dog competition. There would be no security, no safety net, technical access, no protection from exploitation. Noöne would have any more than he could create with his own hands.

Coöperation is good. Family values (government) are good. But, like anything, we should not abdicate our responsibility to monitor and participate in the process, lest exploiters gain power and dominate.

The disease is that we humans are one of the very few species that will pray on it's own. We establish governments to try to stop this, but being made up of humans, the governments we establish then very often become predatory, themselves.

Humans have not worked this problem out, yet. But so far representational democracy overseen by a set of rights and responsibilities seems to work the best. But unless the destructive power of commercial greed is restricted, no government or society will stand against it for long. So the solution will have to include a remodel of the economic system as well as the governmental system if it's going to stand against corruption and abuse.

To me, it's beginning to look like we need to develop a kind of dual economy. One that's very 'socialized' and intended to ensure that everyone has access to the basic needs of living in a modern inter-dependent society, and the other more open and 'capitalized' and able to accommodate those who live for material "success". Once we all cooperate to make sure everyone's basic needs are being met, we would then be free to explore other avenues and pursue other rewards, so long as they do not threaten the systems we have set up to enable our all living together.

The answer, I think is going to have to be a hybrid of ideologies overseen by a set of unbreakable principals.
Definition: The commons consists of essential services, used by almost everyone, and necessary for a healthy society and economy.

I say: socialize the commons, and allow free enterprise in all other services and enterprises.

Socializing the commons allows guaranteed, regulated, inexpensive (non-profit) transparent, community controlled access to necessities. It facilitates social mobility and prosperity. It provides a social safety net should things fall apart. It's family values writ large.
It does not facilitate exploitation by corporate interests, or extreme wealth disparity.

Yes, I think this is what we are coming to. The "every-man-for-himself" days have past away a century ago. The world is not big enough or resilient enough to withstand that kind of gross human selfishness, anymore. We need to learn to cooperate with each other and with the planet, at least on the level of providing everyone the basics.

Also, the lack of competition (via cooperation) at this 'common' level of production would make it very efficient, especially as technology advances. The amount of time and energy needed to fulfill these basic needs would not be that great, and would shrink over time, allowing for more time and energy to be expended on pursuits of personal fulfillment. On the arts and sciences, and on products and services beyond the basics. Every human would have an opportunity to fulfill their potential, and in so doing, increase the quality of life for all of us.

Right now, it's sad to even contemplate how many potential Einsteins and Picassos and Martin Luther Kings have come and gone completely unrealized among us because of the horrible waste and vicious exclusion created by a culture based on selfishness, competition, and greed.

Agreed -- but I'm not sure that the perfect (tense) is quite appropriate.
Trust Busting, New Deal... The Robber Barons were dealt a blow by the Sherman Act, & al, in the early 1900s. Later, when free market capitalism collapsed the economy, FDR's New Deal nearly eliminated them (and they nearly eliminated FDR in the1st White House Putsch).
But now the Economic Royalists have patiently clawed their way back, and they're more firmly ensconced than ever. Our democratic system is unraveling. We've forgotten our history, -- and some things seem to be repeating themselves. A 2nd right wing putsch wouldn't surprise me.

What' scary is that they're global this time. It won't be just the U.S. democracy that falls and succumbs into fascist plutocracy. Other major nations will follow suit because they are subjects of the same giant corporate entities. It's sad to me that we can see it coming and yet are still to foolish and distracted to protect ourselves from it.

Inspired by my own "What Type of Theologies Do You Believe In?" thread I have decided to make one identical to that only reflecting political ideologies rather than theological. I have decided to only use the ideologies here that are supported by their own sub-forum. There are probably a few dozen lesser-known ideologies people support, but I wanted the ones people identify with the most overall.

The poll will be identical to the one in the theology thread: multiple votes are allowed, you can change your vote at any time, you can see results without voting and votes will be public, so if you are afraid of other people seeing your votes, please abstain from voting.

Besides the obvious topic difference this will differ from the theology discussion because I'm putting this in the political debates, so people can vote in the poll, explain their position below and debate other people on the topic as well.

I intend on voting Capitalist, Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian and Other. My other is actually my main political position, which is Federalist. With the rise of the Internet I believe mostly in a one-world federal nation and the "McDonaldization" of Earth.

But I am purposely leaving out other political ideologies in order to structure the thread towards the most common ones. Ideologies such as Federalist, and its counterpart, Localist, Green, Nationalist and Centrist do have a sizable amount of following but are being omitted due to no real representation on the forums. If you check any of these or other political ideologies, feel free to check "Other" and tell us your positions.

That's all I got. Let us know how you answer the question and what you think about this topic below. And don't be afraid to debate people with other political ideologies!

I’m a constitutionalist, I value the free market (Capitalism without all the gov back room deals). I value conservativism to a point. I used to be in the Libitarian party unti Johnson threw religious liberty under the bus.

In short all people should be free to live as they see fit as long as they don’t harm others. Zero government does not work. Minimal government is a goal of mine.

I am centrist, so I don't care if the person is R,D,L,G or NP, if they are centrist I will vote for them.

Apparently Mussolini got the trains to run on time.

Tiz an urban myth

He only got one train to run on time, the one that was taking him to his inauguration. He never did anything to improve/modify the train service otherwise
