A tribal woman to be the next Indian President

Indian Supreme Court is such a kill-joy institution for all parties. We were waiting for their pronouncement on the Maharashtra situation. But it deferred the discussion to a larger bench and stayed any action by both sides.

India's next President in all her tribal regalia. She will win comprehensively. Many in opposition have declared their support for her.
Congress ally JMM, other parties back Droupadi Murmu for President

Epilogue: BJP, the ruling party selected Mr. Jagdeep Dhankar, a "Jat" (caste, tribe) lawyer, politician, currently Governor of West Bengal, as its candidate to be the Vice President of India. This is to please Jats in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. BJP has the numbers to win. The calculation is that it will also cut into the Jat support for opposition parties and influence Jat farmers. BJP does not have strong support among Jats.

Indian Presidential election today. 5800 member of Central Parliament and State Legislatures are voting (in various state capitals - all need not come to Delhi to vote). Result on 21 July, Oath taking ceremony on 25th. However, no doubts about the winning of the BJP candidate, opposition is only in name.

:D Yeah, if you are a Muslim, Christian, Sikh or even a Hindu separatist, you will not fare well in India today. If you are not one, then there is no problem. Indian Constitution and Supreme Court guarantee you equal rights.
However, no problem with a Sikh president. We have had one. Gyani Zail Singh. Although he signed the 'Emergency Order' during Indira Gandhi regime.
No problem with Muslim Presidents and Vice Presidents too. Respected Justice Hidayatullah (stop-gap, 35 days), Dr. Zakir Hussain, APJ Abdul Kalam, and Rubber-stamp Fukhruddin Ali Ahmad, served as Presidents. Vice Prsidents include respected Dr. Zakir Hussain, Justice Hidayatullah (full term), and Rubber-stamp Mohammad Hamid Ansari. In time Christian, Jain and Buddhist Presidents and Vice Presidents also will come.
The current situation for value of votes for the President is like this: Ruling party and associates 666,028, Opposition 413,728.
So, 61.7% in favor of the Ruling party. In a democracy, Peoples' representatives decide (others are welcome to whine and abuse).

Results are out. At the end of third round of counting Draupadi Murmu, the ruling party candidate has votes whose value is 577,777. The Opposition candidate has received votes whose value is 261,062. The value of the votes received by Draupadi Murmu is more than what is required to win (something like 543,000). The counting will continue, but that is not going to make any difference in the result.

What is more important is to note that at least 17 members of the opposition in the Parliament have voted for Draupadi Murmu, as well as some 126 legislators from the states. Some may have voted because they themselves belong to the tribes. But there is also a possibility that some of them will leave the opposition and join the ruling party in time.

Draupadi Murmu at the moment has 69% of the votes while the opposition has 31%. Choosing a candidate from tribes was a master-stroke by Narendra Modi.
He has a knack of doing that. :D
Final tally 64% to 36%.

India electing its vice-president today. No contest. The BJP nominee, Dhankhar, will win with some 68% votes. I think results by evening. They have to count only about 780 votes. Vice-President is elected by majority vote in the two houses of Indian Parliament.
Current count gives 525 to the ruling BJP (Modi) combine and 255 to the opposition.

Jagdeep Dhankhar wins as Vice President of India. He gets 528 votes. The opposition candidate Margaret Alva gets 182.
Dhankhar gets 74% of the votes polled, while 26% vote for Margaret Alva.
must be nice to live in a dictatorship!!
Why do you say that? Elections in India are absolutely democratic, free and fair. Nobody has ever faulted them. Why are you trying to spread falsehood? What is your peeve against India?

Modi, by far, is the most popular leader in India, absolutely honest. Why would Indians not love him? He has never contravened any national or international law.

After 12 years as a Gujarat legislator, 13 years as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and 8 years as the Prime Minister of India, his assets total USD 356,250. He gives away his money in charity from time to time.
PM Modi declares his assets. All about where he has invested his personal wealth

Can you think of any other politician who is this poor after such a long period in the highest offices? The apartment where I live is valued at USD 375,000. I am richer than my county's Prime Minister. That is why we love Modi.

He will become a renunciate after he leaves his position as Prime Minister of India sometime around 2025. He is of the opinion that politicians should not hold office after reaching the age of 75.

A revision of the assets of Prime Minister Modi (March 31, 2022) reveals that he has donated the part ownership of the land which he held. His assets go down to USD 278,750 from USD 356,250. Now, he does not own any land or cars.
PM Modi's assets rise by Rs 26 lakh to Rs 2.23 crore; land holding donated

When Modi relinquishes his office (as per a 2018 report, it may have increased a little by now), he will get a pension of USD 2,000 and facilities. I do not think Modi will need more than USD 3-400 for his expenses and would not use many of the facilities provided. His favorite food is a rice and lentil gruel (khichdi, kedigree). He will donate the rest of the money. I do not think he will stay in Delhi, though he would be eligible for Government accommodation.
