Today's Hike

[The Hammer]

Went on a hike today in Granite Falls, WA. The trail we went on had a closure (there was a bridge collapse due to a storm), so at one point we had to wade waist deep across a river that was icy cold.

Good times. The current was strong enough to sweep my pup away. Thank the Gods I kept him leashed to me, so I could reel him onto shallower waters.

Might add more photos once I get the better half to send them to me.

Looks like a nice place to walk.
I took the daughter's dog on a short walk around a small piece of bush land across the road from where we live and then around a nearby sports oval.
No photos, but extraordinary things start looking ordinary after you have seen them enough times and so I wouldn't know what to take a photo of. Maybe next time.

Nice! I've been doing some hiking this week in WA, too! In Ocean Shores area.
We're so fortunate in the PNW to have access to so many beautiful trails.

The only time I went to that viewpoint I was looking at the mountain and a child of the two folks next to me asked his parents why it was called "Big 4 Mountain". His dad said it was due to the four peaks. I looked up and silently counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. And then looked at the guest information sign that had a nice picture of the mountain that shoed how it got its name. There are two possibilities. On one side of the mountain one can sometimes see a big 4 on the mountain from unmelted snow:

That same picture was right in front of them But to be fair that does not look like the same side of the mountain. Another is that it could have been named for four brothers that used to trap in the region.

Were the snow caves open? Or are they now permanently closed?

I'm so jealous but I'm glad you had a good time.
I can hardly believe all the beautiful places in Washington I have never seen, and I have lived here since 1988.

Can you believe I had to Google Granite Falls to see where it is, and I make maps for the State of Washington as a job.

We used to go hiking a lot in the Olympic Natl Forest up out of Port Angeles but not anymore.
We own a vacation house in Moclips but I have not been over there in years. I have it rented as a monthly rental.

They are permanently closed .

Yes, I remember when that hit the news. When I went it was before then and even at that time there were signs warning of the possible dangers.

Careful what you ask for. This man was an experienced hiker and unfortunately met disaster on My Washington. He was dressed in shorts etc, when he began his hike, the weather conditions detreated quickly as it often does here, from warm weather to snow, ice, hurricane winds etc.
