Today I had an appointement from a 93 yr old lady to look at her violin bows, but on the way she was involved in a fender bender and was late but finally showed up. I looked at the two bows, one was a nice bow I told her was worth $1-2000, as she was getting ready to go I was shocked to see blood all over my floor and her sock was soaked in blood. I told her she had to get to the urgent care immediately, but as she was waiting on my porch I was horrified to see a continual stream of blood shooting out of a small wound on her shin, I immediately changed my story to we have to call 911 and stop the bleeding, because she was loosing a lot of blood, my presence of mind led me to fashion a tourniquet out of an old sheet, wrap it tight twice around her leg and tie a double knot, then call 911. I made the decision stopping the bleeding was the first priority before calling 911, about 15 min later the paramedics arrived and both the paramedics and the workers at the ER complimented me on my tourniquet. If I hadn't stopped the bleeding and she had continued to bleed out for the 15 min it took for the paramedics to arrive, she may not have made it. I have no medical training, but its ingrained in me when you hit an artery you have to stop the bleeding pronto, and so we had a good result, the ER told her she would need some stiches but she refused a transfusion, even though the paramedics said they could see 100cc of blood on my front porch. I did have to spend 30 min cleaning up the blood on the floor, but I just thank God that she is OK, and will have no long term ill effects from the incident. All in a day's work!! [EDIT]

I’m interested in these violin bows. Are violins your business, and if so, in what way? How fascinating to have that sort of specialist knowledge.

Well done on your quick thinking and actions btw.

I run a violin repair and sale business, this customer was just asking for an appraisal of her bows, I give free verbal opinions

Well I further talked to my sister the MD Pediatrician and she conferred that it was an arterial bleed, not a vein, the blood was shooting out in a stream just like water from a small hole in a lawn hose, that cannot be a vein but had to be an artery albeit not one of the bigger arteries, but it reassured me that I was thinking straight to immediately apply the tourniquet to cut off the blood supply, who knows how much blood she would have lost before the paramedics arrived If I had not known how to apply a tourniquet, probably 70-80% of people would not have know how to cut off the bleeding, so I guess she came to the right person to discover the bleeding, I thank God I was able to do my best to rescue her and prevent her from having a much worse outcome.

God bless you for your heroic actions and I hope the lady recovers speedily.

Turns out it wasn't a car accident, it was road rage incident with some crazy guy trying to run her of the road, the injury we are thinking now occurred getting out off her car, possibly hitting the sharp edge of the car door at my house, there was no blood in her car so it happened near to my house and there are no sharp objects at that level in my living room so I don't see how it could have happened in my house. She just told me that the doctor at the ER told her my tourniquet quite likely saved her life, so I am not exaggerating this event, I'm just glad she's doing fine and her son is a doctor and he's going to be following up on treatment.
