Eating a Dog

OK, about a decade ago, I was going to barbeque some meat that my wife was supposed to thaw out for me but forgot, thus I had my grill out but nothing to put on it. However, my neighbor's obnoxious dog was outside, so I went over to their house, took their dog, skinned it, cut it up, and then put it on the grill.

When the neighbor came home and found out what I'd done, I offered him money for the dog, but he still was angry. So, I asked him if he ever ate meat, and he said yes, so I then asked him what the problem was as I was more than willing to pay him for the dog. After all, if he eats meat, isn't that eating another animal as I did?

So, did I do wrong?
You live in China, don't you? It was a delicacy! The problem with your neighbor is that it was HIS meal. :D

I usually refrain from too many quotes but this thread calls for it. Dogs have a special role in creation.

During the process of evolution of forms and consciousness, there are seven turns until the human form develops. Now, every turn has a direct connection with God. We will not now mention the other six turnings; for instance, in the vegetable kingdom, tulsi [the holy basil plant] is on the turning. In the animal kingdom, a dog is on the turning, as it has intuition and also partial insight, without being able to use it consciously.

Saints of the fifth and sixth planes have insight, and they use it. But the dog cannot use it. The dog only sees things that ordinary human beings cannot. The dog's company purifies thoughts and atmosphere. That is why Zoroastrians have the custom of bringing a dog to see the corpse when someone is dead before disposal of the body; the dog purifies the sanskaras.

Dogs play an important part when used consciously by the Master...

Just waiting for someone to say, "Of course it is. You didn't share with me."

Eating a dog isn't wrong.

Eating someone's pet without their permission is. that would be true even if the per were a chicken, a cow, or a carrot.

Stealing from someone is wrong, even if you offer compensation afterwards.

I don't think stealing is the problem though.
Think of a random dog walking by the street, nobody owns it and everybody knows it, then someone decides to kill it and eat it. How would you feel about it?

Of course you did wrong. But I suspect you have some point to make. What is it?

I think the bigger point here is: Why do you feel there is something wrong with killing someone's dog to eat it but don't feel the same way when it comes down to other animals?

About how I would feel if they did the same to a rabbit or a duck. As long as it's in hunting season, I don't see an issue (although hunting in town is usually not allowed).

You didn't do wrong, because in your heart you didn't do wrong.

Because someone owns it? I would feel the same if you killed someone's rabbit and ate it. it would be wrong for the same reasons: theft, emotional abuse, etc.

Intriguing. Have you ever owned a dog or a cat?
