Can a Catholic Pope tell an autistic child “maybe we’ll see each other in hell?”

Thanks to a priest I found this shocking video, where the "pope" calls the mother of an autistic boy.
The phone call is very nice, mother and son express their overwhelming joy.
Towards the end of the call, there is this dialogue, at 3:27

Bergoglio: Thank you both, and please pray for me.
Lady: Thank you Your Holiness. Thank you Pope Francis. We will surely pray for you, but you surely don't need our prayers, for you are already a Saint.
Bergoglio: Oh, my God...
Lady: yes, you really are. You are in our hearts.
Bergoglio: Well...who knows, we may see each other in Hell someday.

* this in Italian, but the sentence also mean : see you in Hell.

To the people who will say : he was joking.
A pope cannot make these jokes. Especially because he is implying the lady too will go to Hell, and even if it is supposed to be a "joke", it is not a joke worthy of a pope.
But he is the Pope...right?

If this is a pope, I am the Blue Fairy.

This whole literal Hell thing is not my favorite, but now they created it, I am at least glad, the Pope goes there together with the rest.

With all the sex stuff having been going on, this is maybe what he truly believes...no joke

Pronouns: he/him/they/them
It surely is.
I don't think that was appropriate in front of an autistic person.
As an autistic person I think it was appropriate for them to hear but the guy could've let the autistic person know they were joking. Also I just find the whole exchange odd. I don't understand the exchange. Why did he say that? What was the joke?

The question is: was he joking?
I have no idea what he meant by "we will see each other in Hell, maybe".
We should ask him.

I think this literal Hell invention is one of the worst inventions ever

This has ruined billions of people emotionally over the years
It was a very beautiful moment. The autistic boy was so happy to listen to the Pope's voice.
The pope ruined everything, by making that joke.
He turned a joyful moment into an awkward one.

Maybe I misunderstood, but reading the article I thought the boy reacted very down to earth and full of confidence that the Pope is a Saint and he himself sometimes a bit mean, so maybe this stimulates him to drop being mean

Maybe the Pope has less confidence in himself (being a Saint) than the boy has. Maybe the boy is wrong on this though;)

BUT

Anyway, I think the sooner they drop the Hell scare brainwashing the better. It is the worst brainwash ever imo

Though his statement is dead wrong... maybe he was saying "I know myself better than you and if you think I am a saint, we are both in trouble"?

However, being the Pope, one would think that he understood that its the blood of Jesus that cleanses us...

So, VERY bad statement by the Pope - regardless.

The mother calls him a Saint, telling him he doesn't need prayers, IOW she takes his goodness for granted.
But it is not up to people to decide who goes to heaven and who goes to hell.
So it appears to me he's just expressing honesty and humility.

But, if he was actually joking, this kind of jokes are not worthy of a Pope.
And by the way, he used "we", he shouldn't have.
Because this wonderful woman does not deserve this kind of sarcasm.
And she even made him a compliment by calling him Saint!!!

If his was a serious point, he could have used the word Purgatory instead, which is what Catholics believe.
The word he used, Inferno, is scary and is not worthy of a Pope. Because he was not lecturing the cardinals, he was making a surprise to a wonderful autistic boy who loves him so much.
And that he didn't deserve this.

If it was a joke, as you said, not worthy of his position.
And completely agree - this woman didn't deserve this kind of statement.

I feel people are making a mountain out of a molehill, but maybe that's just me..
