The Personality, False Face, and Change

is the personality a fixed thing? something that self believes to be permanent; but really is something that can be changed? something that is fluid and capable of being re-designed?

I can say with a certain confidence that my personality changes with time. For instance, it is vastly different today from what it was when I was three.

I believe everyone has multiple faces:

The one when they're alone, where they're truly carefree and will pick their nose and eat it, sing like a dying chicken, and share with themselves the inside jokes they have with their own selves that nobody else would understand.

The one when they're around close friends and family where they're still carefree but they will be more cleanly, they will sing like a dying chicken but with a little more enthusiasm, and their sense of humor is more aligned with the others'.

Then the one when they're around strangers and people they respect but don't like. Filtering the things they say to some degree, they may not sing at all, and their humor is more lighthearted.

Unless that's just me. Although I'm currently lacking on the second one, but I'm working on it.

All in all personality changes as our mind changes, and our mind changes gradually every day as we learn new things, hear new jokes, and find new entertainment. Our thought patterns change, our interests change, our humor changes... Personality is fluid.

IMO, no.

I see myself as a different person than I was yesterday. I'll be a different person tomorrow than I am today.
The only connection is a memory of previously having been someone different.

The only constant in the universe is change.

I tend to see the personality as some kind of boundary shape, like a circle or ellipse for example, and where it might be stretched out of its normal shape by various forces - internal or external - such that we can often exhibit different facets of our personality in such circumstances - and perhaps some such can become permanent. Think of this being rather elastic though, such that there is a tendency to return to the original shape when such forces are gone. As to what shape we start off with and keep I'm not sure what are the main factors, apart from genes from our parents, our early environment, and other such influences. But I still seem to be much like I was when much younger, even if I have had periods when this was certainly not the case. My perspective at least.

This is a really good question, and psychology does not have a firm answer. Those who are into the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator say that a person's personality is pretty much fixed (despite people testing differently on occasion). But those who are into the Big Five say that although it is very difficult to change one's personality, it is possible.

"Your Myers-Briggs type is very unlikely to change. Your personality type is an innate thing that you were born with, and while you might notice some differences over time, it won't mean a different type." Can Your Myers-Briggs Type Change? This Is What To Know If You Manage To Test Differently After A Few Years.

"In particular, they talk about the "Big Five": openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Evidence suggests that these traits aren't fixed at all, and some research shows you can intentionally change these personality traits."
