'UN Human Rights spokesperson Liz Throssell said, “Seven men, aged between 19 and 29, were arbitrarily arrested” by ISA in Tripoli between November 2021 and last month. She also pointed out the fact that ISA has “posted videos of the seven men on Facebook,” in which they confess to being “atheist, areligious, secular and feminists.”

It's been a very long time since the dangerous charge of atheism and apostasy was used against anyone in the religiously conservative country. Such accusations are almost unheard of in Libya.'

It appears from the article that conservative religious preachers such as Mufti Sadiq al-Ghariani, who lives in Turkey, has his own TV channel and controls Libya’s Fetwa House are behind the push for the kind of extremism that considers an apostasy charge reasonable.

Seems to me like adequate grounds for Turkey if it were a just government to consider rounding up Mufti Ghariani and imprisoning him for hate speech.

When Qaddafi took power, he decided to restore some of the old administrative apparatuses and create something very innovative. A very modern form of socialism which is encoded in his Green Book,
which many Western politologists have praised as one of the most influential epitomes of Socialism.
Qaddafi built schools, hospitals, skyscrapers, the greatest water duct ever made, the Great man-made river.
After few decades, Libya became one of the wealthiest countries in the Mediterranean. And the State was the symbol of incredible modernity and innovation, and also tolerant towards minorities.
But what was important is that the regime was against religious fundamentalism, such as the one told in the OP.

I guess the problem was that. In my opinion, the Salafist world,...the world of the Gulf made up of fundamentalist billionaires could not stand that an Arabic-speaking country with a very patriotic Government could set an example.
So they had to destroy it, to restore religious fundamentalism, by exploiting ISIL, who ignited the revolutions of the last decade.
In very few years, they destroyed the Libyan State, they created two states at war with one another... And the new fundamentalist regime in Tripoli implies mercilessness towards atheists or rationalists.

Just let me quote a summary of the Green Book Chapter about Women
"Women and men are equal as human beings, in the sense that they have the same physiological needs, and are thinking and feeling beings. However, sexual dimorphism gives rise to gender roles which are natural and appropriate to the differences between the sexes. Freedom consists in following nature, specifically in women having the ability to raise families without being forced by society to seek work which is suitable only for men."


It was absolutely obvious that the Salafist world had to destroy this Libyan State to restore what we know goes on in those countries, as for women.
Even if we can decide not to agree on the fact that biological differences produce different inclinations, at least the social gender equality is recognized.

Libya was a bit before my time of political awareness, so I wouldn't know if the Salafist world were behind the destruction of it, but I do distrust the Salafist movement as I see it as a generally conservative, generally morally questionable force in the world.
