How To Handle A Traffic Stop Cop

When pulled over, think about these things....
Don't admit to anything. (It will be used against you.)
Never consent to a search.
Anticipate what the cop wants to see....
- Roll down window.
- Have license & insurance at hand.
- Put hands at 10 & 2 o'clock positions on steering wheel.
- Turn off engine.
- If dark, turn on interior light.
- If you carry concealed, immediately say that you're
licensed & whether or not you're carrying.
- Be calm & pleasant.
- Record the interaction on your phone &/or dash cam.
- Don't sweat, reek of booze, smell of dope, slur your speech, pass out, or tell the cop that you pay their salary.

A rather long winded video by a lawyer prone to speeding.
There's useful info & experience....

You don't always have to.

Especially if you're driving a junky car.

I once got pulled over and was given a no seatbelt ticket.... while wearing my seat belt.

You can get pulled over without having committed a violation.
I've seen videos where people were pulled over for.....
- Going a couple mph under the speed limit.
- Going a couple mph over the speed limit.
- Going exactly the speed limit.
- Pulling a trailer.
- Delivering newspapers.
- Looking at the cop.
- Having Canuckistanian license plates.
- False claims that a taillight or plate light was out.
There are many many more pretexts.

I considered buying a radar detector.
Decided against it. Why?
I rarely go much over the limit.
This has served me well.
The only speeding ticket I ever got was in 1977.

That only helps if the cop pulling you over actually knows the law. They don't always, and I've been pulled over before even though I wasn't breaking the law.

Strangely, I have found painting my car with brilliant designs gets me pulled over less. Not even cops wanna deal with that brand of crazy.

If you want to get pulled over in my city, drive a rust bucket.

Trailering tips....
- Ensure hitch is latched.
- Have safety chains crossed.
- Don't overload it.
- Fasten (chains or straps) things down properly.
- Keep your tongue load 10%-15% of total weight (trailer + load).
- Grease the trailer ball.
- Leave 3 to 5 seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
- Look ahead for trouble. Slow down early.

In that case you can't do anything. If the cop is corrupt or doesn't care. But assuming that the cop follow the law.

In my case, it was a state trooper who just happened to be rolling through town.

I've had both good and bad experiences with cops. I've always had reasonable interactions with sheriffs. But I have almost never had a good experience with a trooper(with one exception).

We don't really have that here in Denmark, country to small we just have cops. But all of them have a minimum of 2 years and 4 month basic cop education and after that they can specialize within different things as far as I know.

Driving an Audi gets you away with speeding in my experience. I've gone thru a number of speed traps going around 10 over the limit and certain I was gonna get pulled over but they didn't. This was usually in areas that were lower in economical status, so I wonder if there was a bit of bias at work.

I would think so.

In my experience, looking poor or being in a poor area of town always gets worse responses.

I know they subtract a certain amount of speed when they measure, which might be the reason. I think they do it, because the measures are no a 100% accurate or to simply avoid issues. I don't know if they do it where you live obviously.

EDIT: Nevermind just doubled checked, they don't subtract anything, except from the car own indicator, but not from the measurements they do themselves. :D

Yes, but if you have already been pulled over its to late anyway. But if you did nothing wrong its annoying, but at least you shouldn't get a ticket :D
Sometimes doing nothing wrong can result in a ticket.
Often doing something wrong can mean just a warning.
One's conduct can affect the result for better or worse.

That just cannot be assumed. Sometimes they just think someone looks suspicious, this person gets searched, and is arrested for the "crime" of possessing donut glaze that allegedly tested positive for drugs on a field test kit.
He did absolutely nothing wrong but now when he is asked "have you ever been arrested" he has to answer yes.

I had a cop search my car once for a tail light out... he stuck his hand in a rotten apple that had rolled under the seat. He ended the search. Good payback!

Another weird one....

So much for the accuracy of cops doing field tests.
Poorly trained dumb civilian hating cops shouldn't
be doing them. Their results are comparable to
coin flips...as are K9 drug searches.
Note also how race is treated differently in the video
titles. Race matters only if one is black.
