Threats to humanity

Too bad we did act as quick or did at least half as much about global warming as we did for covid.

A virus, bacteria, disease is minuscule compared to global warming...in my opinion.

Why is it we put so much worry, time, money, mandates, etc into the smaller threats but not the larger ones?

It’s easier. And less money. And less interference…

it’s like, “which numb wound to heal?
This one needs a bandaid, but this other one requires amputation.”

Bandaid, it is!

There's time for all of them. There isn't the cooperation for them to be resolved in due time, and for the sake of humanity.

Like the Titanic hitting the iceberg a second time. Some will remain certain the ship won't sink.

I see it more like... The wound is bad but it isn't that bad yet. Lets put a band-aid on it, forget about it and hope it doesn't get gangrene,,, but if it does we will deal with it then.

Kind of like our infrastructure...lets don't fix it, lets patch it. Now most need more than just a patching because the fixing was put off for too long.

I personally think disunity is the greatest threat to humanity. Think about it. To fix the environment we need all the world to unitedly work together. Same with covid. And world peace, we need to be united otherwise the nukes in everyone’s backyard are going to be used. With unity and agreement we can even clean the oceans.

But we don’t get along very well so all these large priorities get put in the too hard basket.

There is too much greed and hunger for power for unity. In my opinion unity won't happen in my lifetime or the lifetime of everyone here today.
Not until earth becomes near unlivable due to pollution, climate, with many more species extinct, etc then will people unite and say hey, we really need to do something or else there will be nothing left to control.

I agree it seems that an extinction level event might be the only thing that is capable of bringing us together. We’ve had world wars, a Holocaust, Tsunami, Covid and Sept 11 and that didn’t help. So as you rightly have noted, an extinction level even might be the only thing which unites us.Not wishing for it though.

"world wars, a Holocaust, Tsunami, Covid and Sept 11"...

You may not agree but those are minuscule scale,,, small things. If we keep polluting, destroying forest, killing spiecies to extiction, manipulating DNA, etc etc. The worst it yet to come in my opinion.

What I mean by manipulating DNA is "we do" do it with bacteria, viruses, different animals, and even humans. We don't have a clue the harm that it may or will cause years down the road.

We engineer bacteria for example to do what it naturally wouldn't. We relocate a species to battle another spiecies and in the long run it becomes an invasive species causing more damage than good.

For example killer bees are of human interference in nature.

We create so many deadly thing such as gases, chemicals, poisons, etc and we do/have created deadly bacteria and viruses.

Man will never destroy life or earth but we may eventually destroy ourself.

That's correct. But when that slow moving threat is ignored until it hits its peak, its already/may be to late.

I suspect it already is too late. A large chunk of humanity will have to relocate, due to soaring temperatures and rising sea levels.

Well priorities, right? And don’t forget you have large corporations (allegedly) doing everything to block or even deny climate change as a phenomenon because the sanctions for climate change hurt their bottom line.
I fully believe that we should be tackling climate change, obviously. But people are dying from COVID right now. Climate change will affect future generations. So trying to “fix” a known global pandemic will obviously take precedent.

I think that maybe the 'larger ones' are still there, but they might make their home in the subconscious. Maybe that means that no one, or hardly anyone, knows what should even be said about the 'larger threats.'

And it won't just b those who have to move. There will be a huge amount of wealth and property value lost. Will insurance companies cover losses? I'll bet they have exemptions for climate related losses. But if they do have to pay out something the losses will have to be covered by the rest of us who need insurance policies. And as weather events become extreme the losses to insurance companies will go up, as will rates for the rest of us. The wealthy can afford the increases, but the rest of us may struggle to absorb the extra costs.

When the displaced lose their property wealth what will they have to start over? There will be a steady rate of people who don't have the money to start over, and that will put stress on society, especially the elderly.

Who is planning for the future, both as political policies and as individuals?

Climate change, global warming or what ever someone wants to call it is affecting the world today, yesterday and tomorrow.
