The future of tech used for control and submission of people.

Should this kind of thing be banned?

Imagine thousands if not millions of these things roaming around enforcing whatever a government wants to be enforced.

Would you listen to a roving fully automatious machine if it ordered you to comply?

Imagine how much more things like this will advance and upgrade twenty thirty years from now?

They’ve been promising a robot uprising for like 80 years. I wish these would be overlords would hurry up already.
Got some good dystopian stories from it all though
Ironically some are already somewhat outdated.

I completely approve. Certain places in America- such as Portland, Oregon- are in dire need of equipment such as this.

If it was an instrument of the law, then yes, I would gladly comply.

Problem is Ai is actually being used now including use by law enforcement and certainly the military without requiring a human operator.

It's not like it's still confined to the paper pages of a sci-fi book anymore as was in long past.

The first steps have been taken already in reality and tech improvement is amazingly fast now.

It's not really out of the realm of implausibility anymore.

I think the question now is when? The answer is its already started.

I don't like that. But in a way, it's no different from every other piece of introduced technology, in the sense that is to say, that they all seem to represent behavior modulation going forward. I've been trying to articulate this better for a while. It's the idea that at a certain point in history, man is compelled to understand infrastructure and technology more than it understands, or serves, him.

One sticking point in my mind regarding all of this, has to be the recent tragic event where a trucker out west was sentenced to I think 100 years, for failing to understand or react well to brake failure. Conversely, if the operators of the apollo 13 had crashed and caused accidental death, and the crew miraculously survived, then the fault would surely be placed on the nascent technologies they interfaced

Another example, is what social media and the internet have done to amplify social credit, paperwork, and illuminate away anonymity in social action. Case and point, my guess is that it was many times easier for you to secure an apartment when you were 20, when the internet barely existed, and when character-specific detail was either private or non-illuminated by the greater modern database effect

But back to your robot: people complain all the time that they want 'objective' standards for judgement, but the issue is that this dehumanizes you, and reveals that everyone is actually flawed. So if you confuse the robot too much with objectivity, then basically I don't see how you also don't conflate it with being your God. And that God has little use for associating subjective behavior with divinity

The way I see it, people will never behave as good as the bar set by artificial/technologically enabled standards dictates that they should, or, they will mess up possibly while trying to (like maybe what happened with the trucker). But for some reason or the other, this perhaps being the child of all the major religions and philosophies humans have chosen to associate with, is born a modern obsession with objectivity

Better to sublimate this intractable fact of human behavior somehow, then to meet it with a cold sorting computation. And how that is done, I have no idea. But again, people will protest from now until the sun swallows the earth. What is it they really want? What is keeping them from being satisfied - well, maybe it is natural that people sometimes be unsatisfied, and this is poorly understood.

Should be banned? Sure. Will they be banned? Nope. I mean, they use LRAD sound cannons and concession grenades/flashbangs on non-violent protesters as it is (I've experienced those personally and more, myself), and that's just fine and dandy according to the authorities. Those are blatant forms of torture.

Harmless. What is a chunk of metal and electricity for riot control against FaceBook?

I wouldn't mind robots with truly conscious AI. The problem is that there will be a step just before that when the AI is highly functional but still under the control of humans who don't have a conscience.

So you're more worried about some super taser than the atomic bomb?
Interesting.

You live in a democracy don't you? Your country has millions of items for subduing or killing up to millions of people?
Just think before you vote, is my suggestion.

Would you listen to a roving fully automatious machine if it ordered you to comply?
Of course I bloody well would!!
I would be well and alive to complain to somebody.
Are you suggesting that you would not?

Imagine how long you would have survived in the Wild West, or medieval England. I would have been under a rock somewhere......... but in a democracy weaker people might actually have more security.

Ahh but it depends on the AI, right? I mean Hal9000 is downright diabolical.
But the Terminator is awesome

They said that IVF was the beginning of the end of us as a species as well
Where do you think Brave New Word came from?
I’ve grown increasingly skeptical, that’s all.

If you look throughout sci-fi, both dystopian and “optimistic” it’s actually pretty interesting. What new generations take for granted was once a terrifying Orwellian nightmare in the past. Hell, I’d argue that a lot of my generation didn’t really “get” the impact of 1984 simply because we literally grew up in a world where 24/7 computing surveillance was the norm.

A lot of what was predicted by Sci Fi in terms of technology has already come to fruition a hundred times over. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.
Will this be the actual RoboCop in real life? Will it become the Demolition Man? Maybe. But to worry about it seems a bit pointless. Unless you’re planning to write a sci fi novel on it.

I guess I’m just not in the mood for “doomer” predictions right now.

The problem is not the technology. The fundamental problem is in regard to the laws that are made (and enforced). The UK government is taking an axe to the right to protest. No technology needed.

This is why we need to demilitarize our police, and make them an agency that serves and protects people as opposed to an agency of law enforcement. Right now they see themselves almost entirely as a law enforcement agency. And that needs to change.

You haven't seen 2010, have you? HAL was programmed to do as it did - by people without a conscience (or insight, or foresight). Just the scenario I fear.

I wish we could ban those

Yesterday I saw a video that China has robot judges already. 96% accurate verdicts they said, though when speaking about China that could be really bad from Western POV

The US uses COMPAS to sentence prisoners.

An algorithm that lazy Judges usually rubber stamp without even thinking about it, essentially putting the length of a sentence pretty much in the hands of an ai.
