Koran & Hadith in plain english?

Sedim Haba

Outa here... bye-bye!
A Roman said to Hillel, “Teach me Judaism while standing on one foot.” And Hillel said, “No problem”.
Hillel then went on to say “That which is hateful unto you, do not do unto others, the rest [of the Torah]
is commentary, go and learn.”

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, is there a source of plain English Koran and Hadith?

Every time I've tried to explore these, I soon am perplexed and confused by what I'm reading.
The names, the terminology, what I can only surmise what the writer assumes is general knowledge...

Think of my pursuit as similar to a blind man trying to understand colors by taking a painting class.

It's no different in the Jewish world, you make no headway on youtube lectures without some basic
grasp of terms and phrases that the teacher assumes you already know. I get lost there too frequently.

Hello :)

In Islam, you have the Arabic words of Allah and in saying that, whenever you read a translated copy, always have the arabic there next to it. This way you are always obliged to go back to the Arabic if you do not understand it and can ask about it.

Yes, there are many translations of the Quran but only one Arabic version. :)

There are also ahadith like Sahih al Bukhari, Al Muslim, etc. I have them and the Arabic is there with the English translation.

Am I mistaken? Or are there up to 20 versions of the Quran in Arabic but simply try to convey the same meaning?

Yes, you are mistaken :)

There is only one version- One Quran that Allah sent....in Arabic.... but translations can vary.

Do you know the difference between version and translations?

version means different forms of something...like take for instance, the Bible, there is the NRSV, the KJV, etc etc. they are different wordings no two are identical.

translations are the copying of the version

There are different Qariats (so mostly vowel changes), but also some of the differences of between these versions are letters. Few of these places changes meaning. However, to me, this doesn't mean Quran is not safeguarded, just that more research is required to know which recitation is true and where.

They are mostly same with little differences though.

Yes... I understand. So, what are "readers"?

that is what I thought. It isn't that there is just "one Quran" but rather a variety and that one has to study and research to find which recitation is true.

What you should say, that there are 7 different ways of recitation. The words are still the same :)

There are more then 7 recorded. There are 10 official well known and accepted, and then there are even more not accepted or well known ones.

These usually differ in vowels, but sometimes also differ in non-vowel letters and hence differ in meaning.

Sometimes the vowels also change meaning.

Readers are the reciters. In Islam, the Quran can be read with beautiful voices. Anyone can have a tone to read :) It's up to you to just read it or say it.

There are ways to recite the Quran. Example with Tajweed. It is a form of reading other than just saying it. :)

I had a neighbor of mine. He is a surgical obstetrician by profession. Two of his children, grown have memorized the entire Quran and the 7 ways of pronunciations. Allahybarak. They were here for some time and then went back to the states. They were awesome!

I just research where there are disputed meanings. For example 3:7, the hamza differs with recitations. Some stop at 'Allah', others with "the firmly rooted in knowledge". The first suggests only God knows the interpretation, the 2nd suggests the firmly rooted in knowledge know it as well.

I must correct myself, my son told me there are 10 but 7 famous ones. and my neighbors knows all 10! Allahybarak!

This is where you need to get the Quranic scholars to help. They know more than we ordinary laymen. Islam is so vast a book that we are not allowed to say what we don't know. I humbly say, I only know one way of reading the Quran. I find it hard on my tongue and lips, but I study it, I've learned it and The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) also said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (At- Tirmidhi)

The more you read, the more it becomes easier :) Hafs narrating it from an'asim. It took me about 2 years to do al Baqarah, al Imran 1/2 year and an Nisa' 1 year. I need to get back to it astagfirAllah.

The Quran safeguards it's own meaning, where there is discrepancy in meaning in the 10 Qariats, Quran itself somewhere in it, shows what is the proper recitation and meaning.

I can't say because I am no authority when it comes to the ins and outs of the ways to recite. I just know one way and that is the Hafs an asim :)

I've researched most of the discrepancies. I feel I have chosen the proper recitations where there is discrepancy by Quranic explanation and light from God.

Your examples of the Bible are also translations only.
